Which is better in Louisiana or does it matter? Pros and Cons? Is it worth to pay more for cedar?

I went with pine 10 years ago because it was cheaper and I should have went with cedar. Pine warps so much in the humidity. I’m been replacing boards and posts yearly meanwhile my neighbors cedar fence hasn’t warped any

Just had 135' of treated pine privacy wall put up. Used 1x6x8 boards for pickets instead of pickets. 4x6x12 posts that are 4' deep. 5 lats. That should bring several decades.

I’m in the import hardwood lumber industry. Forget that weak treated pine or that western red cedar. That stuff is junk. Cedar is the correct answer though between the two. What you need is 1x6 (3/4” x 5-1/2”) S4SE4E Ipe, Cumaru, Tigerwood, Garapa, Red Balau, or something else we have around here. You won’t be replacing that stuff for 100 yards if installed vertical. You can even burn your yard up and Ipe will be fine because it has a Class A fire rating. You got to be trying hard to catch Ipe on fire.

How much is a 1x6x6 board of Ipe?
Just curious.

What would be price comparison ballpark for pine vs cedar? Have fair amount of fencing in my future, whole back yard needs replacement and its some old pine that's in really bad shape.

Ever imported any of that Australian Ironwood? They say it is the strongest wood in the world (there's several species of it I believe).

Cedar if you can afford it, pine if you can’t.
Cedar is much more stable, less prone to cupping, warping, or splitting. Takes paint or stain much better, gives a much nicer appearance.

That's not a fence, that's a fortress wall...

Yeah, with using 5 lats to secure the pickets to, that should go a long way in alleviating most of the pickets warping and twisting as the heat gets to them and they dry out.
