Cost estimate for 50 amp home generator hookup?

We had an electrician out to replace a failed circuit breaker and I asked him to give me an estimate to install a 50 amp outlet for a portable generator. Here is the details I got for the quote:
"Install New 50amp Circuit in EMT Conduit 50ft from Outside Panel to New Added 50amp Generator Outlet on back side of Home ,& Install On/Off Interlock Kit on Panel Cover".
Cost estimate: $1,823.89
Is this reasonable? It strikes me as being outrageous.

I paid $1273 for that in March of 21 in South MS.

That sounds about right. Nothing is inexpensive these days.
Can you place the outlet closer to the panel and save on the cord length?

It's just under 1000 bucks just for the parts. 6/4 Wire is between $6.50 to 7 a foot right now.

The 50A cord is expensive by itself. I paid $2,000 for a 30A inlet box and cable that had to be run 150ft.

Not outrageous but maybe a little high. I say maybe because everything seems to be significantly more expensive than the last time I looked.

Plus I assume that is material and labor so if you trust this guy's work, I would probably go with it. Otherwise, get a few estimates and see how they stack up.

Base solely on the description you gave I estimated that out @ $1461.86. Thats @ $90.00 hr.
I'd guess his labor is around $125.00hr which wouldn't be surprising if you are in or around a large city. At those rates our quotes would be practically identical.
Price seams to be in the ballpark but always get more than one quote unless you just want to use a certain person.

I love these.

I think I paid just under $1k to have basically the same thing installed, except I was set up to where they basically didn't have to run much wire and conduit. The plug is basically just under where my main breaker box is. Happened to work out that way. I also did this las year before pricing really started to go out of control.

Unfortunately I can't. My main panel is on front corner of house and I would need to place the generator in the back yard a good ways from the house. I'll probably need a 50 foot cable to attach from the generator to the outlet. Then the outlet will have another 50 foot run to the main panel. Not ideal, but that's what I have.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea it was that expensive. Good to know!

Yes, it is both material and labor.

Not sure what you love about it, but I assume it's just snark.
I am ignorant of the costs hence my question. My first quote is way more than I thought (uninformed) it would be. I ask questions so that I can become better informed. Still love it?

You can save a ton of money going with aluminum wire and a manual switch. The manual switches are safe, they lock out power to the grid when thrown just like a auto switch.
They might even plan on using aluminum anyway... Generac offers copper and aluminum hook ups now.

You cant claim ignorance and state that something is outrageous.

You've been informed.
It's not outrageous. Material costs are up, gas is up, inflation is up.
There are a lot of contractors not even taking on service work right now because they don't need it. If the guy already did good work you, then let him do it.
ETA: Why cant he go down and use PVC and bury it in the ground? Might not be cheaper, because PVC is stupid high. Id hate to run EMT on the side of someones house. You'd probably want to paint it so you dont see it.

No need to be a horse's rear end. I said it "strikes me" (i.e., "seems to me"). I didn't say that it "was outrageous".

And all I said was that I love these threads. Generally, people that dont know what they're doing try to critique people that know what they are doing and its funny.
Ive asked you a question about the setup, why is he wanting to use EMT on the side of your house? Can he not go down and bury PVC?

This is the same as an interlock, correct?

The question about using EMT is very valid. That stuff will rust and rather quickly on the side of your house.
PVC underground or PVC up to and down from attic would be a more sightly install.

They essentially provide the same function, but they are not the same and the cost is definitely not the same.
