Anyone have experience with cost of doing it yourself vs cost of hiring someone to do it?

dude. they are pretty standard sizes. replace wooden with aluminium (just a few shims and screws). A handyman is going to charge you $500 to just come out and do it.

It really takes two people to do it right. There are different size and height doors depending on the height of your ceiling. Just go to Homedepot.com. That will give you a price. Add more for trim, shims and screws. Going to need to paint too! Why are you wanting to change? Kind of close to the 300lb mark?

This is on my project list. My wooden ladder is pushing 50 years so It’s past its prime. Doing it yourself will be roughly $200. Getting someone to do it is around $500.

More like $150 or so if it's only installation and trimout for a standard unit.

Two inexperienced people maybe, I've set a lot of them by myself and it only takes a bit of planning.

Aluminum may be a different rough in size

I just put two 1 x 4 across the opening, set the stairs on them, screw stairs in place.

I just case it, walk it up the ladder, push it into the RO tight to the hinge side, shoot off the casing with 2-1/2" trim nails, open the access door, shim and screw.
