Hey All, Happy Friday!! Looking to plant some shade trees in my backyard to block the afternoon sun from my back porch. Wanting something that grows quickly, is suitable in our Louisiana climate, and looks decent.. Anyone have experience with this or have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated!

Maple. Red maple or sugar maple both grow fairly quickly. Deciduous.

I planted three ~4-5" caliper Florida Flame maples at my house 3 years ago and they have each more than doubled in size and they're a good looking tree. Would recommend.

Live oaks are great if you have the space. They're surprisingly fast growing when young and will provide ample shade before you know it. They'll also be around long after you.

Planting a tree is a great little project to do with the kids on an afternoon that you will be reminded of every time you look at the it.

Drake elms are cool, but their roots are very shallow and they blow over very easily.

River birch grows fast, tall, and the limbs can spread far for good shade.

With that said, it constantly spits branches everywhere that you'll have to pick up. Otherwise, decent tree.

Don't plant any anywhere near your home however, roots, fall danger, junk in gutter

How much room do you have?

Shumard Oaks may be an option.

I love the way river birches look but they do drop a ton of branches. I had to cut two down after about 15 years due to some kind of fungal disease. My neighbor had the same problem and eventually cut all four of hers down at the same time, they were about the same age as mine. Her backyard went from a shady retreat to full frickin sun, it was almost unbearable and she's now starting over with little saplings.

Agreed. I have a large live oak in the front yard. Just wanting something to block the western sunset from my back porch. I had a large tree (unsure of type) but lost it through one of these spring storms and now looking to replace its shade relatively quick...

On roughly 3/4 of an acre.. Have plenty of room in the back yard between my neighbor and my home. I have a large live oak that my grandfather planted in the front yard currently.

Yeah, it's not my favorite tree, and I have two in my backyard. But since the question was what grows tall, fast, and shady, it's an option, which is the only reason I suggested it. . Definitely better trees out there.

May not be as popular but I like our sycamore. It grows fast. Ton of shade in the summer. Its negatives work for us. Lot of leaf drop but ours blow right into our viburnums and they act as mulch. I set up a gravel sitting area around the roots that are above ground so no issues there.
