I have about 1500 sq feet of palisade zoysia in my back yard that we put down about a year ago. It is just starting to show a little bit of green, and I was wondering when would be the optimal time to do a dethatching?

Do you need to dethatch?

I laid sod last April and plan on just cutting very low and bagging the clippings.

I’m not really sure. I never cut it down very low during the past year and it seems to have accumulated a good deal of thatch. I mostly bagged the clippings. I’m just worried about it coming back strong.

This will be my third summer with palisade zoysia and the thatch is very thick. I plan on buying a Worx electric dethatcher. I cut mine a little better than 3/4” bagging most cuts.

Rather than dethatching it try aerating it which in turn will help dethatch it.

Um yeah, I know they aren't the same. Almost all lawns need to be aerated. Not all lawns need to be dethatched. I doubt he has a vertical mower and an aerator so he will have to rent both or pay someone to do it. Try the aeration first as dethatching may not be needed after that.

But an aeration absolutely helps to dethatch a lawn.

Does aeration/dethatching need to be done every year?

I am a firm believer in aerating once a year. I get that it might be tough to rent or pay for someone else to do it but it does benefit the lawn tremendously. Dethatching is also a great thing for the lawn if it needs it. All lawns are going to have a thatch layer but as long as you cut your grass at the correct height and never cut off more than 1/3 of the leaf blade you should be alright.

I aerate when the lawn is actively growing but not too hot or cold. The next couple weeks should be fine.

All the research Ive done shows that liquid aeration is a complement to not a replacement of manual core aeration.

Anybody here ever attempted core aeration with a 6 zone sprinkler system? I plan to mark the heads with flags but worried about underground pipes.

Just answering the questions under one post.

Liquid aeration is not an aeration. Only a core aerator can truly aerate.

I would imagine a place like AAA rental as one. Try to find a Ryan aerator though. Those are nice.

Your sprinkler pipes are buried deep enough so that you won't hit them. Mark the heads and you will be fine. If you have drip line in the parkway then do not aerate the parkway.

Home Depot has an aerator rental as well. For a normal size lot (1/4-1/2 acre) it’s not too bad to use for a couple hours.

I know many lawn services company will do a one-time service like aeration. For example, TruGreen offers the service if you don’t want to do yourself.

I’m planning to buy a tow behind aerator in a few weeks once it’s time to aerate.
