DIY quail/chicken incubator

I have chickens and recently added quail to the farm, I had a small styrofoam incubator and the thermostat recently went out. I have always been interested in a diy build. I found these plans on Coturnix corner on YouTube, guy has excellent ideas. His was all pink foam board but I added the 3/8 plywood for stability, also added the electronic box on top. He has the plans and parts list on his page if anyone is interested. Holds up to 80 chicken eggs or 240 quail eggs just need to add one more egg turner on that top cleat.

Very nice. Incubating is fun.

What does one do with live quails?

Particularly coturnix quail, AKA Japanese quail, mature at 6-8 weeks of age start laying eggs and are ready to be eaten. Takes a chicken 9 months. They’re also bigger then bobwhite quail. From a homestead view it’s more efficient of a bird to raise, they’re smaller and you can raise them in small cages so predators can’t get them, don’t need a lot of space. Eggs have more nutrients then chicken eggs. There’s a long list of positives and a very short list of negatives about raising them.

Do they fly? You only raise them in cages? Or can they be free range?

Yes they can fly, and no they cannot be free ranged. Some people farm bob white because they fly well, the breeder will make a “fly cage” or “run” and it allows then to fly when they want, they raise them and sell them to clubs to put out for guest to shoot. Bobwhites take longer to mature but are a better tasting bird

My grandpa raised them for meat (Yum) and for the eggs. I used to LOVE getting his pickled boiled quail eggs. Best damn things ever.
