Does anyone use a walkie talkie around their property?

As we get older, I can't call out to my husband loudly enough for him to hear me and he never turns his phone on, if he takes it with him.

We just had a heck of a loud lightening strike and it almost sounded as if he'd done an explosive start of a brush fire, only longer.

If he had a WT that he'd pick up when he goes out doors and returns to its dock when he comes back in, it might help to be sure that he hasn't been hurt.

We've got 150+ acres rolling with hills , sinkholes, and some heavy forests. Do you have experience with communication devices in similar terrain?

Don't have nearly 150 acres, but house and property are big enough to warrant walkie talkie use.
I bought some for this purpose, but we fail to remember to bring one to the basement or out back of the property etc.

Eta: we end up using cell phones.
But, our cell phone coverage is weak.

Sounds logical, but if he’s not going to bring his phone w him why would you expect him to bring the walkie talkie?

Sounds like you need to an AirTag in his underwear so you’ll at least know where his arse is

Has it ever occurred to you that he just NEEDS to get away for a while and not be tethered to some damn device for you to get in touch with him??????????????

We tried, but we constantly forget the charge them and they now collect dust.

I have a nice set of Motorola. And believe it or not they worked pretty well for when the kids were small and wanted to run around the neighborhood. Now they have cell phones so we dont use them.

99 percent of the conversations were
'hey can you hear me',
'yes"
"Im on the walkie talkie"
"I know"
"I hear you fine"
"can you hear me now"

I tried some of the handheld Wilkie’s that were supposed to be 4 or more miles. They didn’t work 1/2 mile to the front of my neighborhood. Don’t be surprised when they are much less useful than advertised.

If the man isn’t using his phone, why force another device on him, unless he’s avoiding it due to reception issues?

Just using your smartphones would be the best if you have cell service over your property.

If not, buy a couple of cheap handheld CB radios. Sometimes you can find these dirt cheap used. You can expect a 1 to 2 mile range on those. If you need better range try a better telescoping antenna.

If CB is not good enough for, try two handheld Ham radios. It takes about 10 hours of studying for both of you to get your basic Technician radio license. Handheld Ham radio transceivers operating on the 2-meter band using 5 watts typically transmit up to 10 miles without a repeater, but many operators also choose to use repeaters to extend that range exponentially.

My kids take one with them when they go to the back with me so their Mom can holler when lunch is ready.

We used to use two-way radios in trucks, tractors and a home base.

When we use to cross the border into Mexico, we used them. It was easier to get in touch with folks. I had 4, just give them out. Charge them after returning to the US.

What's with these first-time poster bots bumping old threads to make some generic post on the issue?

What is the motivation? Is the JDSimmons bot programmed by the walkie talkie industry to make social media posts and encourage sales?

Had a lease years ago with terrible cell phone reception and the 4mile walkies didn’t work bc of bottoms and trees. We used VHF radios and they worked great. I was actually considering getting 2 of them for my new lease when my son is hunting alone bc we have very poor reception at 2 locations.
