Doug Young Wholesale Nursery (Forest Hill) Pics and experience

I've wanted to make a trip out to Forest Hill for a year or so now, and finally had a good weekend to do it. I didn't "Need" anything but had some spots around existing landscaping I wanted to refresh, replace or redo. I also have never brought my boys too Lea's Lunchroom, so it was a good double excuse to go. I couldn't find much info online aside from their price list, so I figured this thread may help others who might consider going.
First off, it's huge. I think they sit on 100 acres. It is all self-serve, which is great. You pretty much drive your truck around and load up whatever you want, then pull up to the garden center to checkout. It is overwhelming. 100 acres of nursery is no joke. Most stuff is generally grouped, but as you can imagine things get shuffled about as needed. You're given a map and pricing. The sections are each 550'-650' long and 100' wide. They must have 20 of those sections + 40-50 greenhouses.
Prices are very good. I'll post a picture of what we impulse purchased. I'm glad we went. The experience was very cool if you like nurseries or gardening. The plants all looked great. There were a few things we grabbed 1 gallon pots of, but the plants in them were as big as most 3 gallon plants. The 3 gallon plants were all nicely filled out as well.
what we bought:
4- 3G Junipers ($7.50/ea)
1- 3G Texas Sage ($10)
1- 3G Hinoki Cypress - Fernspray ($14)
1- 3G False Cypress Gold Thread ($14)
1- 3G Golden Thuja ($14)
2- 1G Foxtail Ferns ($7)
1- 1G Globba Ginger ($9)
1- 1G Variegated Ginger ($7)
2- 3G Butterfly Bushes ($9)
1- 3G Mexican Bush Sage (9)
Grand Total after tax and a few % CC Fee: $146.30
The logical argument would certainly be the cost of gas and your time. Fair enough. I've done crazier things for a hobby I enjoy. If you are doing a big project or just like to see a huge nursery with great prices, it's a kick arse trip. As far as Lea's...the food is pretty lacking now. It is still a slice of nostalgia if you ever went as a kid though.

But how was the pie? Last time I went the coconut cream was delicious.

I had the peach. Fist let me say my wife is a pie master. It was OK. The crust was pretty good. The filling was way sweet and no acidity. So the peaches didn’t really taste like peaches. I’m sure it’s a canned filling lightly doctored .
Maybe the cream pies are a better bet.

I went earlier this year because I wanted some 15gal plants and biggest I could find locally was 3gal. Definitely worth the trip.

I take it you drive the speed limit and didn’t get pulled over by the cops?
I worked at DYN for two weeks and still remember all the Mexicans cracking open a Dos Equis at quitting time.
Next time, you should drive through and look at the ruins of Camp Claiborne.

I think I just got lucky. Didn’t realize how fast it went from 55 to 35 approaching the town.

Did you find some good Mexican food there?

Less has been putrid for a while.
Been here since 94. Eaten there three times. I’ll never understand how it survives

I’ve always wondered what makes Forest Hill famous for plants? Why that town?

For anyone willing and able to DIY landscaping in Louisiana- Forest Hill is the best hack! Beautiful, affordable plants & they’ll even help you chose.
Most landscaping companies will double/triple & in some cases quadruple these prices for the plants and really any material. That’s before labor.

Thanks. Yeah, it's Palisades Zoysia that I installed in the spring. It's luxurious, but damn it grows like mad in the summer. At the moment I'm doing some spot watering where it dries out. My front yard looks like shite. Backyard like a golf course.

Water quality. Centered in a pine forest, the water is slightly acidic. Most plants thrive in that. Same reason for the pocket of nurseries near Folsom/Amite.

I always go to Forest Hill for big purchases. I found it’s about a 3x markup at a nursery. I could drop some dime at a FH nursery
