EARLY fungus in my St. Augustine

I'm beginning to side with ronk. It doesn't seem like these fungi were an issue 20-30 years ago though. I treated with propicanizole last week, and will follow up with azoxystrobin next week.

What’s his take on this? I don’t know what you are referring to.

Ronk’s opinion, which I agree with, is that Bermuda is the alpha lawn because the other southern lawn types are much more susceptible to heat, drought, fungus and disease.
I would say pests, but Bermuda is more susceptible to army worms which prefer the highly fertilized and finer blades of Bermuda. Trust me, I know

He’s said lately that St Aug isn’t holding up worth a shite in his DFW area and he’s getting blamed for it. But in reality they’ve had record droughts, heat, and cold in the last three years alone.
States that DFW is the northern limit for St Aug, which I did not know.

Probably due to climate change lol.

Other issue with SA is torpedo grass.
Completely untreatable in SA.
Bermuda you have some options and cutting lower and more frequently its not as big of a problem.

What did you use to treat? I want to make sure I have some product on hand, just in case.

St Aug is struggling. It is not holding up like it used. The current way the weather is set up is causing major issues. In my area this really kicked off in 2021. 6 inches of snow and 129 hour below freezing. A lot of St Aug died, what didn't die suffered from take all patch fungus........then died. Zoysia, which was a little less used is now starting to take off. Certain varieties are shade tolerant and stand up to disease and cold better.
And yes, I do believe that bermuda is the dominant grass. If you were to round up your entire yard and return it to dirt, bermuda would very soon pop up.

For torpedo grass in bermuda you can use repeated applications of quinclorac or that product that you can use on golf courses.

in you opinion, what's the best zoysia for shade tolerance and disease resistance in baton rouge?
Posted on 4/9/24 at 8:33 am to jlsufan
Palisades zoysia is probably available in Baton Rouge.

It is available through Woerner Turf on Airline by Women's Hospital. Love it in my backyard. Kinda want my front yard to totally die so I can justify the expense of replacing it with more zoysia.

I plan on treating in a few weeks and I use Triazicide Insect Killer, which obviously didn’t work last year

I’m going on year 3 with my St Aug and beginning to loathe it. I welcome the Bermuda trying to take it over.

I'm coming around to ronk's mindset lately on bermuda.
I had a pretty bad case of large patch a few years ago when we had a really wet Fall season, and that shite is totally uncontrollable now every Fall, even with alternating Azoxystrobin and propiconazole each year (monthly applications). So when spring rolls around, the grass takes forever to green up and fill in the diseased areas. I'm this close to converting over to the dark side, likely will be renting a sod cutter to rip out all my St. Aug and replacing with bermuda soon.

Go for it! You won't regret it.
I did the same with roughly 8000 SF of centipede about a year ago with Tifway 419.
