EGO lawn products - recommendations?
Posted on 2/18/25 at 9:48 am

Bought my first house and hit up Lowe's in search of the good ol' trusty Toro push lawn mower. Inventory was about 90% electric and 10% gas.
What the hell? When did this change? I'd like to note that I'm much younger than all of you here (late 20s) and I haven't cut grass since high school. Most recently had a town house without a yard so didn't have to worry about it.
Lowe's was trying to sell me on the EGO brand - said the big thing with them was that the batteries are compatible with all EGO products.
Does anyone have any experience with them? Good? Bad?
I was looking at the EGO POWER+ 600 Series Touch Drive 56-volt 21-in Cordless Self-propelled Lawn Mower 7.5 Ah, along with their weedwacker, and a leaf blower
Any insight would be great

EGO POWER+ 56-volt Cordless Battery String Trimmer and Leaf Blower Combo Kit 2.5 Ah (Battery & Charger Included)
I have the 615 CFM blower and it is pretty great for my yard. We're on 1/3 acre and I have the mower that is about 5 years older of the version you posted, same battery capacity. It works for me. When grass isn't stupid high I can get through the entire yard with one charge. I also have a 4.0 Ah battery that I use on the blower and carbon string trimmer. If all you want to do for your yard is mow/weed eat then this would be the ideal kit. You can hold the string trimmer sideways to do edging, you'll just eat through string faster, and that's fine.
Upside for EGO and all battery mowers is that you don't need fuel and you don't have to worry about the problem that comes with ICE mowers. Downside is that batteries do degrade over time, but the degradation rate on EGO mowers is guaranteed to a certain amount that I do not recall. I believe they state it's up to 90% capacity after 3 years, which on an normal 1 hour run time goes down to 54 minutes. 6 minutes is not a major drop in reality.
The combo packs are nice because you get a decent set of equipment at a good price, but the 2.5 Ah battery is not great for the blower. It'll run the string trimmer for awhile.
Again, all of this is relative to what your home needs. I went ahead and bought a carbon string trimmer from EGO and use that 4 Ah battery if my 7.5 Ah goes down when I'm doing regular mowing in tough mowing seasons.
Storing the tools is easy, especially the push mower. I have never used the self-propel because it hauls arse at the lowest speed and I don't have any hills to climb. The turbo on the carbon string trimmer is great for when there are dense areas I can't reach effectively with my push mower.

I have enjoyed the EGO products I have.
Blower
multi head for trimmer, edger, pole saw
18" chainsaw
All of the products work great, and have plenty of power that don't have me wanting to go back to gas b/c they are underpowered.
I have 3 batteries. 2 of them are OEM that came with the blower and chainsaw. One is a chinese knockoff off Amazon.
the first battery with the blower, which is what i use the most, kept over heating and not working about 3 years after having it. Warranty is 4 years, so worked out perfect. Went through the warranty stuff and they sent me a new battery.
the 2nd battery is now 2 years old and has had some issues recently with not charging after using it. It's like I have to wait for it to cool down before it will charge. This is after using the hell out of it on the chainsaw.
All 3 batteries are the same 5.0ah. I was cutting a tree down and cutting it up a few months ago. The newest battery that i got with the chainsaw lasted a good while, probably 30 minutes of pretty continuous use. the one that was 2 years old lasted a good 20 minutes, and the chinese knockoff one might have lasted 5 minutes.
I'm hoping that 2nd battery i have that's now the oldest is goign to die soon so I can get another one via warranty.
That being said, I don't like the fact that i've already had 1 battery fail after 3 years, and looks like another one will fail after 2-3 years. I don't abuse the batteries either, as i rarely ever run them to 0%. The recent chainsaw use is the only time i've used the batteries and gone from 100% to near 0% in a single use, and the batteries are hot once that happens. While the chainsaw has plenty of power, i don't think the batteries are meant to be used as continuous under that type of power being pulled for so long. I should be taking breaks after each cut and letting it cool down, but I wasn't.
I'm sure having a small yard that takes 10-15 minutes to push cut would be ideal for the battery powered EGO, but there's no way i'd get the zero turn they have, or even a push one if i knew it was goign to take 30+ minutes to cut the grass.

How big of a lot are you cutting? I got one and was great for .25 Acre lot, struggles a little with a .5 acre lot.
I have a greenworks. It's really nice not having to worry about gas or oil changes. Although blades aren't as strong and will require sharpening more often. From the research I did it probably won't last as long (or at least the battery) as a well kept gas mower but it should pay off between 5-10 years.
I also have a chainsaw that has same battery; and a converter so I can use the batteries while camping.

I've got the mower you referenced. I love it, but IMO the self propel is not needed. The mower is so light that there's just no need for the self propel option.
I've had my EGO blower since 2017, which was the first EGO product I purchased. The battery died in 2019 and was replaced via warranty. I've since added the hedge trimmer, weedeater and chainsaw, and have had zero battery issues since.
So nice not to have to deal with gas in my lawn equipment.
For reference, my yard has gotten much easier to mow over the years, especially since we put a pool in with lots of landscaping around it. So I don't have a lot of grass to cut. It takes me roughly 18 minutes to mow front and back now. I've never had the battery go down to below 60% in my mower. So use that as reference. If you have a larger yard, you may need more batteries.
I use the leaf blower several times a week and it's great.
Highly recommend the EGO products from my personal experience and usage.

how big is your lawn? mine is too big for my ego mower tbh. i run the 7.5 down, the 5.0 down, then both 2.5s and then they're all charging.
in my defense, i didn't live here when i bought that mower; we moved to a house with a much bigger yard.
i'm old but ornery and would keep going if the battery held on longer but i need to take that break and drink some water so this is probably a good thing.
protip: try not to let your grass get too high between mowings and you'll cover alooooooooooooooot more ground on a single battery. if its clogging up and ramping up the torque to chew that long-arse grass you let grow, you're gonna be making the walk of shame to your garage with that 7.5 under your arm pretty fast.
also, dont throw a hot-arse battery on the charger right after you bring it in. it will probably not charge properly and you'll be pissed off when it shows 'fully charged' but you bring it back out and the battery dies 10 minutes later. let the thing cool down a little before charging.
overall i recommend. i have :
- ego chainsaw
- 2 ego hedge trimmers (dont ask, one was recalled and EGO sent me a second one but they both work so why not?)
- 500 and 750 CFM blowers (again, the wife needs to show me some love and help out so 2 blowers are better than one)
- lawn mower
- multi-head with tree trimmer attachment & string trimmer attachment
- old string trimmer (still use)
- 157 battery chargers
- 7.5, 5.0, 2.5 and 2.5 batteries (i need at least one more 7.5)
so yes, it strange i have so much crap but i came by the collection honestly
and yep its great to be able to use any battery anywhere.

Electric mowers don’t have the weight and bounce over yards leaving a bad cut. They also get bogged down on thick warm season grasses.

Do your homework and check the Greenworks lineup

My homework has been watching new neighbors move in and take over once spectacular suburban lawns.

If you're in the South, the weather over the last 2 years has destroyed a lot of beautiful lawns. The massive summer heat wave from two years ago has destroyed a lot of my St. Aug and it's to maintain it when i can't go out and water frequently.
Dull mower blades are why lawns usually look like crap if people regularly mow and fert

quote:that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You got moguls in your yard or something? This has never been an issue for me and my current lawn is on a pretty significant slope.

quote:again source? The EGO mower is a brushless design and will increase torque if it hits tall thick grass. It is true it will chew through the battery faster if you let your lawn get too high you lazy frick. That's called physics.

I noticed this issue before when I used to cut my previous firm's grass with a Kobalt battery mower. The grass was pretty damn thick and at times it felt like the mower was riding on top of the grass.

Again, in the same situation as above, the Kobalt would bog down for a second before ramping up to cut thicker/higher grass. That second or 2 of waiting for it to sense the thicker grass was an annoyance but not a deal breaker.
To the OP, I have a love/hate relationship with my Ego. I had the Kobalt trimmer and blower originally and switched to Ego last year. The battery on the Ego does not last as long as the Kobalt. I have a 1/2 acre yard and could weedeat/blow off my yard with 1 Kobalt battery with plenty to spare. With the Ego, I have to do the front, then put the battery back on the charger while I mow the back so it gets some more juice to finish the job. However, I love the auto-feed for the trimmer string. The Kobalt's trimmer head would get gunked up with dirt and it would be a pain to wind it back up with string.

What voltage was that Kobalt?

How is this dumb? Its a pretty well known fact that has been discussed. Electric mowers lack the weight therefore when you are cutting a thick bermuda or zoysia, all 4 wheels of the mower will not sit on the ground as you push through a lawn and will float above the ground leading to uneven cuts. A gas mower has the weight so the wheels are in constant contact with the ground.
Also people who buy electric mowers tend to not really care about their lawn, as they want the ease of a battery so they won't cut as often leading to even thicker lawns that the electric mower struggles through. Laughing about half cut lawns from owners of electric mowers dying in the thick grass is a running theme in my neighborhood dad group chat.

ok. i'll have to post pics of the lawn 'i dont care about' and i have used an EGO mower for about 3 years now and never ONCE had a bounced lawn effect. thats just dumb.

Sorry you think its dumb but its a legit issue. According to Greenworks, their lawn mower weighs 59 pounds. My Honda weighs 76 lbs. That difference is significant and it makes a difference on the cut.
Its a free country so feel free to post pictures of your lawn, IDC.

I have had the handheld leaf blower for way longer than I should have. Probably a decade. I don't think I have ever replaced the battery. I also don't cut my own grass for the past seven years, so my heavy use of the blower is limited to the occasional driveway and patio blow off. I love the product. If I needed more tools, I would stay in the EGO ecosystem. Especially with the interchangeable batteries.
