I have a 32 slot panel with 1 free expansion slot. Think there’s 27 or so circuits when you count those taking 2x slots. I Have some projects I want to do that would involve adding electrical circuits. Had electrician out today and he quoted $3400 for a replacement panel & installation, which would take me up to at least 42 slots. That would not include any costs associated with adding new circuits once I have the capacity.

How is that as far as cost goes? Atlanta area. Seems really high but my sense of prices on anything is so shot after past couple years, figured I’d ask here before trotting out more electricians, just to see if that’s in the ballpark.

ETA: Cost of a 100 amp sub panel, plus wiring/circuit work to put it in garage on other side of house, is around the same all-in.

We got quoted $1800 a couple years ago to just do a straight swap 200a for 200a. Our HVAC guy replaced the bars in the existing panel and got it working for a $100.

I would add a panel unless there was something wrong with the first one.

Some breaker models offer a half size breaker so you could put 2 breakers in 1 slot freeing up another slot. That may be an option for you if capacity isnt an issue.

Seems a little high, but could be easily be high or low.

It's not as easy as just a panel swap. Depending on your local code he could need a permit for the disconnect/reconnect. If it's being inspected then he'll more than likely have to bring everything up to the most current nec or whatever your local ahj wants.

I paid $4,000 to upgrade to a 200amp. They also installed a whole home surge protector. I know I paid a lot but it was good, reliable work, from a well know licensed and insured contractor. Did it in 3 hours.

Wonder what that hourly rate comes out to.

Make sure you follow up closely on getting your power back on. Mine was out for 2 days due to a clerical error by a third party inspector that is required to give the ok to Entergy to turn the power back on.
