190' of fence in LA

Been told that metal poles will add about $1500 to bid, cedar pickets another $1100.

Thoughts?

I would suggest both. Lumber these days sucks and warps easily. Metal posts and cedar pockets will look much better, stay straighter and last longer.

I had 315 ft installed in November. The price was outrageous enough at the cheapest, so I opted for the “buy once, cry once” option. 315 ft, metal posts, cedar pickets, 1 double and 1 single gate, $9400.

Another vote for metal posts and cedar fence boards for reasons already stated.

Besides, it's not my money, but if it was, the above is the way I'd go, but I'd do the fence myself and save the labor costs.

I went with 4x4 posts instead of metal posts. All the people around here with metal posts had their fences laying down after Laura just like the ones with wood posts.

Go cedar if you can. Looks a lot better.

100% on the cedar. The pine pickets warp and bend within a year or 2.

Ive never had any issue with the 4×4 pine posts, though. Just my experience.

I have metal posts and cedar pickets. I kind of need to replace the gate but everything is in such good shape even though it looks weathered I just haven't bothered.

I did 4x4 and pine 2 screws in each board per runner. Looks ok after 5 months but time will tell.

My metal posts were put in the late 50's, not sure when the current wood was hung but its pretty old. Let me know how your pine posts are doing in 70 years.

im not denying the quality of metal and cedar. I just dont care enough about it to spend the money. I wont be in this house long enough for it to matter.

This is why I bit the bullet and paid the higher up front cost. I had done some research and talked to several fence builders. Cedar will last twice as long on average. Metal posts could last even longer and require less maintenance.

When I was getting quotes, wood posts and pine pickets would’ve saved me about $1k. But I should save in the long run. Ideally I would’ve built it myself and saved even more, but I just don’t have the time between work and extra curricular activities for my kids.

Metal posts all the way.

Won’t rot or warp.

We built a fence last January, and at that point cedar vs. pine were practically equal.

Cedar pickets weigh less also which makes a difference especially on gates.

I can assure you the metal post of today are not the same as those made in the 50's.

With that said...metal would probably still last longer than wood.

I can point to multiple wooden fences around me where the 4x4's are well over 20-25 years old.

Buy once, cry once. Square metal posts and cedar.

Where are you located in LA? I have a great fence guy that does amazing work.

True.

I have some metal posts from the late 70s that are still good to go.

Replaced a section of fence in the 90s with new metal posts, and the new ones rusted off underground after about 25 years and had to be replaced.

I went 4x4 posts and cypress pickets. Cypress was cheaper that cedar and affords rot protection. Have to call around fence supply places to see who has them. In BR I got from Bell Fencing. Dude was great as he came to my house to give advice.
