Fertilizing St Augustine

Moving from the Outdoor Board
I’m looking for direction on fertilizing after applying weed and feed. My yard was in bad shape after the great sod worm attack of 2020. I used weed and feed around April 15th, but I still have some clover and crab grass left. Can I use the Scott’s Southern Turf Builder even though I still have the weeds?

I’d spray the weeds with Celsius to get them under control, and re-fertilize in mid-June. Use lawn fertilizer not weed &feed for the next fertilization.
You familiar with Celsius - I’m going to guess not. The upfront cost is expensive, $104 for a 10 oz bottle from Site One Landscape Supply, but a bottle will last 4 or 5 years (avg size residential lawn) so the prorated cost is more than reasonable. You could also use MSM Turf, cheaper and very effective on numerous broadleaf weeds but not on crabgrass.

How much did you apply? You don’t want to over apply fertilizer. St Aug should receive between 2-4 lbs of Nitrogen/1000 sqft per year. So depending on how much you put down and how often you want to apply, that will determine your answer.
You can apply fertilizer even with the weeds present. It’s better to try to take care of the weeds so they don’t consume the nutrients you put down, but you also should not neglect the good grass that is present.
I’d suggest a better plan would be to use a selective herbicide to treat the weeds. You can spray the weeds, wait around 2-3 weeks to see how effective it was then decide if a second application is necessary. At that point, you could decide to fertilize the lawn again.

Just adding on top of what has been said. No weed and feed. Fert and spot treat weeds.
Are you sure it’s crabgrass? 90% of people call dallisgrass crabgrass.

Now that I look at it, it’s clover-like with little yellow flowers. I have that stuff mixed with normal clover. I put a bag of weed and feed with a spreader, so it wasn’t very much. I applied it like the bag said. My issue is that sod worms destroyed my grass last year and the clover took over in the fall/winter. I’m trying to get it back under control.

Sounds like black medic, is that what you think you initially thought was crabgrass? If so, you could could buy the cheaper MSM Turf to control it and the clover. Even that little 2 oz bottle ($25) will last a few years. 1/8 tsp = 0.5 gram per gallon + a couple tsp of surfactant. It’s really too hot now to be safety using the trimec or weed-free-zone herbicides.

??Bingo. Flowers and crabgrass don’t go together. Yellow flowers with heart shaped leaf is oxalis. Yellow flowers with a clover shaped leaf but smaller and slightly noticeable dark green striations is medic.

Bumping this instead of starting a new thread. Can someone recommend a good fertilizer for St Aug. I read on a different thread but can’t find it that 15-0-10 or something like that was recommended?

Craw recommended Lesco to me (st aug) and I found on Amazon. Ordered some Celsius on Amazon for spot treatment as well

Scott’s Turf Builder Southern Lawn Food is a 32-0-10 that’s pretty readily available. It’s not their weed and feed just the fertilizer product.
You can get a more balanced one from various nurseries or lawn/landscape places.

Where do you live? In Baton Rouge at Site One I buy a Lesco 24-2-11 and use it on St Aug - something close to that or 15-x-x or 20-x-x lawn fertilizer is fine.
Just divide the first number into 100 to get your application rate per 1000 sq ft - so 24-x-x is 4 lbs per 1000 sq ft, 20-x-x, 5 lbs, or 15-x-x, 6 2/3rds lb. This provides 1 lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq ft, which is university research based recommendation per application for St Aug.
You can make another application in mid-August.
