I want to plant a few fig trees. Any recommendations on what variety? Is it ok to plant them now or should I wait until fall?

Brown Turkey Fig is what I have. Plant now if you can water regularly.

LSU Purple, LSU Gold, Brown Turkey, Celeste. There are many more varieties developed by Dr. Ed O’Rouke with the LSU AgCenter but the ones listed are easiest find at retail garden centers. As stated you can plant now, but you must pay attention to watering.

Check with this place if you’re in BTR area. They had some the other day. They might still have some fruit trees.

I would plant a brown turkey….it’s not the prettiest compared to the LSU varieties, but it is the best tasting fig IMO. If you are after the sweetest fig, that would be the Celeste, but they are really small.

In my opinion, after living almost eight decades on a farm where I've grown numerous varieties of vegetables, flowers, and trees since I was a child, Celeste is the best fig I've ever grown and eaten! They are very sweet, seedless, the best for eating straight off the tree (all birds and squirrels will agree), and the best of all varieties of figs for home canning, i.e., jams, preserves, etc.

I don’t suppose you guys have access to calimyrna out there? Those things eat really well and they’re huge.
