Any strong recommendations on which ones to visit? Looking for a large shade tree, Maple or Oak. It's been ten years or so since my last visit there. TIA

Doug young nursery is where I went. They had everything I needed.

I found out my last trip didn't pay to go.

Bobby Young Nursery, which is part of the Doug Young Nursery (DYN), will have 15 and 30 gallon trees. Its about 5 minutes away from the main DYN complex, if you are coming from I-49 you’ll pass by the Bobby Young nursery before you get the DYN. This is their product and price list LINK.
A heads up - the second weekend of March is when they have their nursery festival and it’s very crowded - that might not be a good weekend try to go pick up a tree if you are hauling a trailer, but many, not all, of the nurseries are open to the public then and you might be able to buy one then and pick up later - depending on your planting schedule.
ETA: Also Young-Hollaway Nusery, again about 5 min away from DYN in another direction sells 15 and 30 gallon trees, to the public. LINK

Those 2 closest to I-49/open to the public and across the street from each other are Sam Stokes Nursery and Poole Brothers. I think their prices for 15 & 30 gal trees, if they have them for sale, may be higher than Bobby Young nursery, another 5 minutes down the road.
ETA: Stokes is my place to buy fruit trees and some herbaceous perennials when in Forest Hills and I’ve bought shrubs from Poole Brothers when DYN didn’t have what I was looking for - so both are good places.

How much (estimate) saving would one have going buy all landscape plants from one of these personally vs getting from a landscape company?
Posted on 1/30/20 at 11:21 am to Purpleblooded
Delivery from these nurseries is about $300 so places in baton rouge account for that and then charge at least an additional $2. Cleggs probably does $5-10 depending on the size of the plant

Suppose I want to purchase all landscape plants/shrubs everything and pick them up myself and hire someone to do the work vs just hiring a landscape company to do everything. How much of a saving would one est?

Not sure where you live , hope you have a big truck. I fill up the bed in my Tacoma every time my wife and I go . If plants are in a trailer they need to be covered . If your buying bulk probably save around 40 % . Great quality .

Save your gas, time and money. Shop your local nurseries, plant shows, and retailers. We went a couple of years ago and nothing we saw was unavailable in BR. Between Cleggs and LA Nursery all was covered

Prices are all the same or close?

The wholesale price+10% (sales tax) from the Forest Hill nurseries is about 1/3 the cost of of retail plant nurseries, so it is worth the trip if you are purchasing a significant amount of plant material, particularly the larger 15 or 30 gallon trees.

I really don’t know. Certainly the landscapers will have a markup on the plant material they would be providing you, which I would assume would similar to the cost of the plant if you purchased it at a local retail plant nursery.
Whether they would up-charge you for labor to install landscaping material that you provided vs plant material + labor they provided I can’t say. I suspect if the landscapers warrant their work, they would insist on providing the plant material.

I don't necessarily go to save money, but to see a greater variety than I find locally

I’m a big fan of the local retail plant nurseries you’ve mentioned and shop at them often, but when I needed to purchase about a dozen 15 gallon and 30 gallon trees, it was worth the trip to Forest Hills to pay $50 vs $150 for a 15 gal tree, and $100 vs $300 for a 30 gal tree that I would have had to pay at the retail nurseries. Plus, I had a choice between dozens of trees of specific variety I was looking to buy at the wholesale nursery vs maybe 2 or 3 plants of the same variety at the retail nurseries.
Even after renting a 6 x 14 open trailer for a day ($45), purchasing a large tarp from Harbor Height ($30 or 40 as I recall) to wrap the trees (not needed if the trees are deciduous and not leafed out yet vs evergreens) and 3/4 of a tank of gas for my Tundra (say another $40) I saved beaucoup $ (well over $1K), but I spent the savings on buying more plants.

I’ve mentioned in other posts, that I hunt about 15 min from Forest Hills so I’m frequently in the area to pick up plants if I need them. But if I need just few shrubs of a certain type, I’m going to buy them at the local retail nurseries, plus I purchase all my garden/landscape prep supplies at local retail nurseries.

Same here. And it’s understandable that retail nurseries can carry only a limited inventory of larger, more expensive plants at their retail outlets.

Yes and even better when I factored in the drive from BR. When I was looking for a swamp red maple I called a grower on the north shore who only sold to retailers. He said he sold to Cleggs in BR and that’s where I got my swamp red maple.

Why are there so many nurseries in this area?
