Fortified roof

Has anyone gone through process for fortified roof in LA. Did you have to replace roof deck. Roofer said it has to be certain thickness. Trying to see how much it would be for 1200 square foot house. Roofer said he was unsure. Trying to see if worth getting fortified roof vs. savings on insurance.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Replaced mine early this year due to wind damage over the years.
No roof deck replaced
They aggressively re-nailed (size, ring shank, tight spacing) the deck
Price seems to vary greatly by company. I had a Farm Bureau claim and the roof company I used up charged me $500 for fortified. Ice/water over 100%
My initial savings was $1k annually so the $500 was a no brainer in my specific case. Also, a fortified roof is a desired property on the books for the insurers. Hopefully that gives me some protection from being dropped. And easier shopping if I did get cancelled

Your roofer doesn’t know how much it’s going to be? Sounds like you need a new roofer

I'm in the process of building a new home. Paid extra for a "fortified roof", which, the building code is actually standard in our area SELA. The part that I paid extra for is an increase in the roof decking from 7/16” to 5/8”, added 4" adhesive membrane seam tape on the roof deck (not standard code), additional labor costs for application of tape, and the inspections to have the roof "Fortified certified, to get the insurance discount.
Do yourself a favor and have a really good understanding of the Fortification methods before you start looking for a quote. Understand which method you will want.

All a scam for higher rates based on higher costs
In all my years in south La
Other than say Grand Isle , Ive never seen a storm peel standard roof decking off a house

It’s not intended to keep the roof decking from blowing off. Taping the roof sheathing seams and using ice/water shield underlayment is to reduce interior damage from leakage if/when the shingles are damaged by wind.

If you’re building you should look into the complete fortified system. Not just the roof

I did, wasn’t worth the extra costs for me.

Check into the Louisiana Fortified Roof $10,000. Grant Program.
You might get lucky and get your name drawn.
$10,000. goes to the roofer direct.
You pay roofer the balance.

I just got my Farm Bureau renewal and it was $30 higher than last year. So I spent $500 for fortified last year. Saved $2k so far ($1500 net savings)

From my understanding that program is only for re-roofs. Not for new construction.

So how did you get a fortified roof for $500?

I had to get new shingles on my house last year after a bad hailstorm, decided to do the fortified roof process, cost me $3500 extra. I have saved about $1300 so far on my house insurance. Well worth the cost if you need to reroof your home.

I do not know about new construction.
Give them a call

I am getting my roof redone after Francine finished it off. It did it's duty for Ida I suppose. Anyways, I told them to go ahead and fortify me and it is only costing me $1k. I may be getting a little help since we run in the same circles where I have helped out a lot but I do not know for sure. I would like to hear more about the savings people are seeing from this

Something that is overlooked ...
If you have a fortified roof, your replacement cost will be higher, so your insurance will be higher
Have to compare rates of the house with and without fortified, based on a higher replacement cost
When 98 % of the houses in your hood are not fortified, good luck getting insurance to pay a fortified claim
They will say you have an atypical, higher priced roof for the area and will only pay for a standard roof replacemnet cost

I had an insurance approved new roof from FarmBureau. With the settlement money, Pelican roofing only charged me an extra $500 out of pocket to upgrade to fortified.

What area do you live in? That's a damn good price.

Prairieville. I suspect part of the deal is the nonsense we all see in insurance vs contractors. I pay a premium for Farm Bureau coverage but when shite hits the fan the cut a generous check without a single fight.
They likely overpaid for what the roof should cost and the roofing company decided a bit out of pocket would probably just be gravy on top of gravy for them. For me, the extra $500 was just a great deal I had to take.
I started the initial contractor conversation with "I want to put a new fortified roof on my house..." so they knew what they needed to do to sell me on using them.
