Just bought a house with gas lanterns near the front entryway.

Previous owners had them turned off, so I lit them and they seem to work fine, but after a few minutes my wife noticed she smelled gas while in the front yard. I'm guessing one of the lanterns has a small leak.

Is this something I can fix myself or do I have to call a plumber?

How do you test for a nat gas leak and is there a quick/simple way to fix it?

The shutoffs aren't right inside the lantern? Did you have it wide open, or did you have it turned down to medium?

Where is the on/off valve located in relation to the smell/ leak? On my two house lanterns, the valve is located directly beneath the lit part, so if there were a leak it seems it would smell even though the lantern isn't lit, if it were leaking. I will only smell gas if the lantern is not lit if blown out by wind.

A mixture of dish soap and water. Just apply around all fittings to see if there is a lead. It will bubble up.

The shutoff is between the lantern and the wall.

Will try the dish soap and see if I can pinpoint.

What is the fix if it is the shutoff?

Get a plumber to change the shutoff if it’s leaking.

Turn off the gas to the house, unscrew it, and pipe dope a new one on. Turn the gas back on, and go re-light all of your gas stuff. Some have compression fittings, and that would be best case scenario.

If it's not screwed on, you have to heat it up, pull it off, and solder a new one on. Doesn't sound like you should be doing that yourself
