Good centerpiece plant for a large most/full sun planter?

I've got a big concrete planter I just cleaned out, probably 6'x6'. Looking for a good, large leaf plant that can go right in the middle with some smaller stuff around the edges of the planter. Any DIY landscaping pros got a tip?

Year round or seasonal?
Gardenia tree for formal look and height.
Gingers, heliconia or canna lily.
Crotons if you can protect it during winter. Magnificent, stoplight, Roosevelt
Ti plant?
Orange bird of paradise?
Hibiscus?
Sun tolerant camellia?
Hydrangea?
Copperleaf?
