I’m just trying to get grass growing ASAP and let the St. Augustine eventually take over. I’ve conceded my yard will look like shite this spring and summer

Thoughts? Should I plant Bermuda, Zoysia, or something else? Or should I just go with St. Aug right off the bat?

You can't seed St Aug, if you want st Aug from the jump it's gonna require plugging or sodding.

I can’t make sense of this. Why would you assume SA would take over?

Sid or sprig Bermuda if full sun.
Seeding is a waste of time.

I don’t know

I guess i am talking out of my arse

I’d rather just seed it. I don’t want to spend the money on sodding. New construction went way over budget

I like centipede and have seeded several yards with it.

How big is the lawn renovation?

As mentioned, only decent seed options are Bermuda or Centipede. Rye is getting a little late to use as it’ll die over the summer, and Bahia is not really a great lawn grass.

A pallet of St Aug sod to cover ~450 sqft is around $250 if you put it down yourself.

At a minimum, I’d recommend to get one pallet of St Aug (if that’s what you want) and use it as your “sprigs”. If you want any kind of decent lawn, full sod is gonna be the way to go.

You just spent all this money on leveling and top soil, and you’re gonna cheap out at the end and potentially ruin that work?

Opinions on carpet grass? From what I've read it does well in poor draining acidic soil

Sod a section. If you like a project, Sprig or plug the rest.

I have a good bit of St. Aug towards the back and sides of my backyard and on all sides of my front yard.

I’m just going to spread some seed and see how that goes

It is generally hated on by lawn fanatics because of the fact that it makes seed stalks when it goes uncut for more than a week, and grows very fast, requiring a lot of cutting. I intentionally seeded with carpet grass 8 years ago because it tolerates literally anything and I don't mind the stalks because i maintain my yard and rarely see them anyway. It also lacks a designer herbicide that won't affect it like Bermuda has. It is pretty much unkillable by any natural phenomenon, including flooding, drought, fungus, poor soil, etc. It also has a brighter green color that lacks the deep green some people prefer.

Im definitely not a lawn fanatic. I just wasn't some grass instead of stickers. Just seeded carpet in an area in my yard. Do you think it will take over the st. Aug in my yard? I usually keep my grass cut regularly

It won't take over but when the St Aug dies back from fungus the carpetgrass will move in.

Carpet grass would make a sort of “utility” lawn where looks are not a priority. It doesn’t look that much different than centipede or even St Augustine but sprouts numerous seed heads quickly, second only to bahiagrass. It looks okay after a mowing. It is only available as seed.
It’ll probably eventually start showing up in a neglected bare area if you do nothing, and do a fair job of crowding everything out. But that’d take too long for your situation.

Bermuda seed is most likely to successfully get grass quickly if you go the seed route. Seeding is gonna be more labor intensive at first because you can’t allow the seeded areas to dry out for even a short time period.
Consider “checkerboard sodding” to cut the cost of sodding potentially in half. In other words, lay down pieces of sod every other space and stagger the pieces in adjacent rows. St Aug spreads fast, second only to bermuda. So maybe you can have a completely knit together lawn by sometime this summer.

You have new soil. Spring in Bermuda if no trees. It’s free and better than seeding.

If you don’t have irrigation, get it down before all the rain we are about to get.
Even still, it could be a long shot.
