It looks like we are going to be doing some exterior painting in the near future (porch columns, front door, back deck) and as part of that my better half really wants to paint the porch ceilings blue. We saw houses with the blue ceilings in Charleston and she has been in love with the idea ever since.

Is there an agreed upon shade of blue that one would consider Gullah Blue or Haint Blue?

I found an article on Southern Living a few years back and it listed several different paint codes from different companies but they ran the gamut (thanks grizzly) from bluish-green to robin's egg to grayish-blue.

Just Google it bruh...

quote:

Hain’t blue is not the same color as the blue on porch ceilings. Southern Living published that misinformation years ago and it had been repeated and repeated. The closest image I can give you to hain’t blue is the evil eye blue you see on Greek talismans.

The actual color of Hain’t blue is also found painted on Portuguese houses for the same reason— to keep out evil spirits. Given the Portuguese involvement in the slave trade, the fact both the country and descendants of slaves in the US would use the same color is not surprising. The question would be, from where did it originate?

I grew up in SC and during the late 60’s and early 70’s and hain’t blue was common on doors and shutters. It is not common anymore and is hard to find. Where you will not find it is on the ceiling of porches, which is more of a sky blue…..hence the wasps confuse it with the sky.

I think the color looks great. As far as wasp and bug confusion, I've heard it has nothing to do with the color, but instead the original formulation of those pigments had a pest preventing chemical to achieve that hue.

That's my understanding as well. On the Georgia and South Carolina sea islands and coast they mixed indigo dye with a lye based white wash. The lye or some other something in the mixture worked as a natural bug repellent, f and because it had to be reapplied every couple of years it was like a biannual pest control application

SW Atmospheric is what you’re looking for. Painted about 1500 sq ft of spruce T&G about two months ago.

back in the day my mom had a paint/interior store, they sold insecticide you could add to paint. I don't see it around any more, maybe it didn't work.

Thanks.

I found out that Sherwin Williams actually worked with Historic Charleston Foundation to create a palette of approved colors for renovating historic homes. The created a Duron color called Piazza Blue (DCR075), but it seems Atmospheric is as close as you can get to that now.

Probably weakened the paint.
