Got a call from renters that tub drain was draining slow on Tuesday. I went out that afternoon after work and put commercial drano (Thrift) down drain but it didn’t unclog it. I decided to come back out Wednesday with a handheld 1/4” 25’ drain snake to unclog it.

I show up Wednesday morning to snake it and renter informs me that toilet stopped flushing (overflowing) overnight. I snake tub drain with 25’ and still clogged.

I then go rent a 50’ 1/2” electric snake with a 1” bit and run all 50’ but it doesn’t unclog it. So I call plumber but they can’t come until Thursday afternoon. Renters are pissed and get a hotel room for the night, both have work next day.

Plumber guys show up next day and quote me $1,050. I was in a pinch with renters so I had to pay it and couldn’t shop around. They pulled toilet and jetted it and got it in two hours. $1,050 for two hours work without changing out anything other than maybe a wax ring on toilet.

I’m shocked by this pricing. Is this normal?

I wish we could charge $250 a man hour like the plumbing industry does. I see this all the time unfortunately.

Yes, plumbers and elecs are getting 200+/hr plus travel expenses...
Equates to about 600 minimum if you need just a little help.

You agreed to the price and now you are wanting to call out the plumber who fixed your issue. You’re a douchebag

did they also offer to do it time+materials?

Giving a quote can be risky for the plumbers if things go south with unexpected things. They charge more to cover their arse with a quote vs T&M.

Who was the plumber?

My daughter just had same work done during the freeze and was $200 cash. But we've been using him forever.

I had someone from Ronnie Frisby come unclog a line and replace an exterior faucet. It was like $200-$300.

Who did you use?

I always use Next Plumbing now. I know the owners and several of the folks that work there from our church (I know the owners' parents ). One of the owner's dad also owns a plumbing service, CJs Plumbing, which I also used in the past and was reasonable, I also know CJ and his wife from our church. If it was one of them, I would be surprised, that seems steep to me. I have never paid a plumber more than $1000 except once when I had a long gas line run (and I think I overpaid, switched plumbers after that) and once when I had them install a tankless water heater.

I'd be curious what your renters are dumping down the toilet.

He answered a question I asked. You should consider reading before you respond who he is replying to before you respond.

You sound like a guy who overcharges people for what you do but doesn't want anyone to tell people about it.

Sorry but not surprised.

They charged my daughter $300 attempting to unclog her drain. Then told her it would be another $300 for them to get the big snake from the shop.

She call someone else who did it for $150.

No. The op got a single quote, agreed to the price and is now upset bc he may have over paid. And he edited his title. He had the companies name in it originally, you sir can gfy. I am sorry I don’t agree with someone agreeing to and paying for a service that was done to satisfaction, then going on a public forum to call out said company. No worries, wouldn’t it be fair if the company came on here and called out the op for being a dumbass? You tell me.

I have no idea what the original title said. I asked him who the plumbers were. When he answered me you chimed in.

The OP, like most people, probably rarely calls a plumber. And like most people probably has to decide if he is willing to wait to get other quotes or take care of the problem right now. He was in a pinch, specifically for an income-producing property, so opted for right now.

He said he was quoted a price, neither you nor I know if what he meant was he got a hard quote or an estimate, people use the terms interchangeably quite often and plumbing companies rarely hard quote something like unclogging a pipe because of the unknowns.

After they did the work and with the time and materials used it made him question if the cost was reasonable. That is an understandable reaction. What he described seems like it would not have been quite as much as he was charged but regardless of that, it seems like a valid thing to ask. I guess he could just go on one of the many review sites that let you rate a service provider and blast him there.

But hey, you go ahead and be triggered by it.

Such an overused word. Keep your floaties on in the shallow end of the gene pool. You’re safer there
