Hiring licensed contractors...how does Louisiana license people?

Everybody always says, "Make sure your contractor is licensed and insured." But what kind of license am I actually looking for?
There's some info on LA licensing board but It also seemed a bit confusing.
Say I want to hire an HVAC guy. Would his license say mechanical? Would his license say Mechanical, HVAC?
What about a plumber? Would his license also say Mechanical? There is a plumbing subclassification under mechanical, but it also lists plumbing as a major classification.
How are general contractors listed? Also, doing a search of some local conctractors in my area, some have licenses listed under their company name, and some under their personal name. And one large plumbing company that has many service providers only has 1 listed plumber. Another HVAC guy who has a small residential business only has a commercial license.

so you're in the right spot to find out if your contractor is licensed at the louisiana licensing board. You can search by company name or a personal name if that's how they are licensed.
As far as licensing is concerned, a residential contractor's license is needed for projects over $75,000.00 having this license active also insures your contractor is insured as well. There is also a building license, which is louisiana's commercial licensing for projects over $50,000. Mechanical is for HVAC. Plumber's have their own licensing board.
here's the link with some explanation LINK /

If you're looking at doing business with someone the easiest thing to do is ask them for their license number and you can search by that as well. Also you can ask them for their insurance certificate, which will list their coverages to review.

Did I see something recently saying contractors don’t have to renew their license anymore?
