In the BR area, State Farm insurance. After the severe weather a couple weeks ago, I found some shingle pieces in my yard. I know damn well we got hail both days, I sat outside and watched it on Thursday and my son said it was worse Monday (I was at work). I know a lot of wind and things hitting the house. Trees down all around the neighborhood, neighbor's tree down etc.

So I called a few companies to come out and do their free inspection. Note, my roof is pretty old, but doesn't leak and I never saw shingles like that before, even after the hurricane. They all told me there was damage, and it was worth filing a claim for insurance.

I filed, the adjuster came out, and denied the claim. Said there was no evidence of hail or wind, just wear from age. I got the rejection letter within an hour after he left. The contractor I had settled on was surprised, says I should file an appeal because there is clear damage. Says there can be some depreciation due to older stuff, but he said the adjuster just ignored what was there. Told me to send that letter to my agent along with his estimate, and appeal.
He told me he's been roofing since Katrina and hasn't seen something like this ever.

Is this a normal thing, just the game they play? I know the contractors want a check so they may play things up, but the companies all said I had serious damage and it shouldn't be a problem, the question was how much I would get.

Sometimes you just have an old roof that needs replacing.

Some insurance companies will not write a policy on houses with aged roofs like this.

You have an old roof. The policy is not a warranty. You have to take responsibility for the roof yourself.

It’s mind blowing how many people don’t understand this.

My friend owns Gatway Roofing in BTR, he met with the insurance adjuster. When he came down off the roof, said, you are getting a new roof. Done.

I don’t know what your roof looks like. I do know I had to fight with Allstate for a year after a hurricane to get a new roof. I had branches through the roof.
They never agree on the first claim anymore as far as I can tell.
Appeal it and keep pushing. It’s a damn shame we pay them what we do only to be denied when you need it.

I had a tornado hit a rental house of mine, it ripped the deck clean off the house.

Allstate marked the claim up for a box of nails. No bullshite, they were just going to come out and nail it back to the house

Had the city inspector get involved and the claim progressed.

Your average insurance adjuster doesn't know shite and just wants to not pay out.

Sounds like the adjuster is a dipstick. Most become insurance adjusters because they can’t do anything else.
State Farm used to be my insurance provider for many years. They have gone down that woke road. If your agent doesn’t go to bat for you, switch. They should at least cover some of the repair.

You do have recourse....if you don't like the response of your insurance company in regard to your roof needing to be replaced, look for another insurance company. This is America!

This seems to be the major difference between insurance companies. Everyone I know who has/had State Farm or AllState had claims initially and usually ultimately denied.

I just had a new roof put on in March (Farm Bureau) and the sales guy and project manager for the roofing company told me many horror stories of dealing with those other companies. Unfortunately in this state, we're limited in who will write policies and captive to their ways.

I do believe you can hire independent adjuster to fight your fight. Usually a roofing company will go to bat for you as well and plead your case.

Some roofing companies won’t even come look if you tell them you have State Farm. My ex-wife found a roofing company where their front man was an adjuster for years. She got a roof, my neighbor and I got a roof, and several friends and Coworkers got a roof, even though my ex and I both have State Farm.

How large was the hail? Do you have soft metal damage from the hail?

Frick that. They wrote you a policy that included your roof if it was damaged by a storm, now it has been damaged by a storm and they wanna deny it because it’s old? If that’s their POV then they should not have written you a policy. But since they did they are legally on the hook to do their job. You need to get with a public adjuster IMO. Tim Nelson (832) 463-8968 he’ll make em pay if he believes they should. Talk to him. There may be attorneys involved depending on their level of cooperation FYI

Wrong. Wind damage is wind damage. If the roof is old, then they factor in depreciation.

These roofing companies are scammers and committing insurance fraud. I had premier south come out to inspect my roof after the last storm just to be safe. I told the guy the roof is only 2 years old and over the phone he said, "don't worry, we are going to find damage. We always find something."

That's why our insurance is so damn expensive here. They are no better than the ambulance chancing lawyers.

Total scam right now . I had a guy go to bat for me after all my neighbors got roofs . State Farm rejected me 3 times my guy sent roof samples to 3rd party testing labs and forwarded results to Farm . After 6 months I finally got new roof. Mine was 19 yo 30 year roof. Complete shite show get a bulldog to outlast them. They want you to quit fighting.

Not sure on Monday, I wasn't there. On Thursday it was marble to slightly larger, and lasted a good while, a couple minutes. High winds too, rain was going horizontal like a hurricane, but almost straight out of the North.
My son said Monday was way worse, he had freaked out and called me to tell me not to drive home, just stay at work. I drove back later that night after it calmed down.

Yes. I've had several of the guys point it out on the vents. You can see it a bit from the ground. One company's guy was up there awhile on the roof, marking spots with chalk. On vents, on shingles.

I'm watching roofs go up around the neighborhood this week, and mine is no older or in different shape than those. Got the house in 2000, have had one roof done since then, maybe 2006 or so? I can't find the papers on it. Wasn't insurance claim at the time, it was just old (and I wanted to change color anyway because it was ugly). It's on an older house with tongue and groove pine, not plywood. The wood is still solid as ever. Had some work done about 10 yrs ago, a large branch fell on it and knocked half the facsia off. Guy at the time told me had it been plywood, it would have come through the roof, but it bounced off. No cracks.

I know my neighbor behind me had a blue roof for 9+ months while he fought with State Farm and eventually won.

My buddy at work got a new roof and said 20+ houses on his street got new roofs at the same time, 2-3 were skipped. Those were State Farm houses.
They had damage like everyone else. They just didn't get approved by SF.

My dad gave me some terrible advice at times, but a few that helped me out. One of the better ones when shopping for my new Home Owner's insurance 20 years ago.. "you may not be able to afford the most expensive insurance, but you certainly can't afford the cheapest"

I think for the first time in Tigerdroppings history I've seen a story where the roofer was actually telling you the right thing to do.

A simple reinspection will suffice. You will get a different adjuster this go around that should do a better inspection. I would make sure your contractor is there so he can get on the roof with the adjuster this go around.

If you have a roofer that actually knows what hail damage is (most of the bozo salesmen roofing companies send out don't even know what true hail damage looks like), he should be able to show the adjuster the actual damage if he tries to claim there is none.

With State Farm, yes. State Farm and Allstate are hands down the two worst companies for homeowners. They are absolute crap. I'm a contractor and deal with insurance companies all day. You could not pay me to have SF or Allstate as my coverage. They are actively looking to screw people over and get out of paying, it's what they do.
