Hot water tank running out of water quickly

I’ve noticed my electric hot water heater isn’t putting out like it used to. It’s about 9 years old. What could be causing this?

Might have had a heating element go bad

Like Bowtie says, may be a heating element.
I have to adjust my thermost every few years to bump up the heat. Not sure why that is, maybe sediment at the bottom.
Bump the stat and check the element. If you don't know how, check Youtube.
Nine years isn't old for a water heater.

Drain it, flush it, change both elements.

Electric water heaters have two heating elements. I'm sure you know this, but some others may not know this

Depends on the size and first-hour rating, many only have a single element.

Need to flush out big time. Must have a lot of settlement in your water to do that.
Turn off power and run all hot water out the tank. Turn water off. Hook up a hose and lead it to your overflow drain line. Open the valve were the hose hooks up to and drain the tank. Once drained, cut the water back on and keep the drain line open. Let it run a good long time to flush out the tank.

Probably a bad thermocouple.

Electric hot water heaters usually have two heating elements. One at the top and one at the bottom. It appears the bottom one is out. Id replace both or buy another new water heater with it 9 years old. Either way be sure to replace the hot and cold water lines entering and exiting the tank.

In my limited experience if the bottom element is bad the water is scalding hot but runs out fast. Reason being is all the hot water is on top and the One element tries to heat the entire tank. If the top element is bad you often have barely warm water, the bottom element tries to heat the whole tank but is unable to keep up.
There’s 2 elements and a thermostat OP, you guy replace all 3 components for like $35 very easily. As said the other issue is you may have a ton of sediment.

Change out the dip tube.

First, consider replacing the water heater bc the bottom usually rusts out of a water heater within 10-12 years. I've replaced 2.
if not willing to replace, each element has a reset button. take off each cover and carefully press the reset. then if that doesn't change anything, change each element.

Related question:
Why do they tell you to cut off the power to the water heater before adjusting the thermostat?
