How much weight will a ceiling joist hold safely?

I need to temporarily lift/suspend something ~300 lbs in my garage and have the ratchet straps to hold it, but I don't know how much the 2x4 joists will support? I'm guessing it's stronger at the junction of the truss supports.
Thanks
Thanks

um, no the price of being wrong is too great

Is it a ceiling joist or a truss? I suspect that if it is a 2x4 and not a 2x6 you are dealing with an engineered truss and not a ceiling joist. What is the span of the room?

Depends on the span and are you suspending it from the center?

yes, truss made from 2x4's, garage is ~ 20 ft wide

Google joist span table. Your answer will be there.

do not do it, unless you want to start repairing your house.
just go buy, or rent, an engine hoist, to do whatever you need to do

Ceiling joists are not 2x4

Just go and get an 8-foot long 4” X 4” and. Span the joists with it and tie your lift to it…..cheap insurance.

he has trusses and yes those are all 2x4 construction.
have a look here to see the differences explained LINK

They can be. My old house has 2x4 ceiling joists....although I put in 2x8s before I decked the attic.

This sounds like a problem i would've gotten wrong on my mechanics of materials exam

make sure to check the weight rating on the packaging for your new 'swing'

That's exactly what I ended up doing. I had the spare lumber and, like you said, distributing the load across several joists it didn't even flinch.

Trusses yes. I said joists
and he specifically said it was 2x4 trusses
if you are going to reply in a thread, at least read the thread you are replying to

Don't argue with him - he is always right and at the same time full of shite

Have you ever walked on it? How heavy are you?
I made a hoist of sorts by running an eye bolt up thru the ceiling and into a piece of heavy metal channel that was spread across 3 joists. I walk around in this attic all the time, so I figure the hoist is good for at least twice my weight. I still don’t plan to use it for anything more than about 100 lbs.
