HVAC Replacement cost

Bought an older house a few years ago. It’s got a 4 ton carrier. It struggles to keep up in the summer.
Just got an estimate to replace with a 5 ton Heil HVAC for $20k.
Is that a decent price or am I getting screwed?

I’d still be calling around if quoted half that.
It’s $5-6k worth of equipment if not changing ducts and not going variable speed. Is 2-3 technicians for 1/2 day worth $15k?

That seems high as shite but I haven’t replaced one. I had 3 carrier units on my last house and had one replaced under warranty but it was the outside unit.

thats high. get two more quotes. In general, stay away from chuck-in-the-trucks and big chain outfits. Find the mom and pop with 3 employees.

I actually trust this company which is why I’m considering it.

I got quoted 20k to replace my current 4 ton with a 5 ton variable speed. That was for a Trane, which will never end up on my house again so I’m waiting for a couple more quotes before we pull the trigger.

Get a couple of more quotes and see if you still trust them.
Do you have enough insulation in the attic?

Does variable speed matter that much? Feels like it would drive the cost up.

Yes we have enough insulation. It’s an older house and the 4 ton just isn’t big enough. It is definitely under powered

Where are you located? If you’re in the Lafayette general area, I’d suggest Chapman’s .. we know the owner and trust them .. been with him since he first started.
Owners name is Seth.

They recommended it for me because I have three zones and need to run a bypass for some of the smaller zones. I can get rid of the bypass and save some money since the aster is the zone that works the hardest in the summer and it’s also the smallest.

Way too high
I had 2 five ton Units replaced last year, one with electric heat, the other they did not have to change the gas furnace but did replace inside and outside units with American standard , no duct work, but did completely re do the secondary drip pan on both
$7600 and $8k

For the money American Standard is one of the better!

My system is 5 zones, with a 4 ton Carrier that handles them nicely. But in a few years it will be time to replace it, and I hear zone A/C's ain't cheap.

Give TMAC out of Kentwood a call. I've been very impressed with him.

I paid $10,500 for a 4-ton American Standard replacement in 2023. BR Area.
