I'm about to light this thing on fire. A few times a year it builds up tons of ice on the coils in the back of the fridge. It stops cooling, and it causes the fan to make an awful racket. It also forms solid ice sheets on the bottom of the freezer and can prevent the door from closing properly until I clean it out.

Are there any tips to keep these things from happening other than trashing this thing? I can't complain too much because it was a free fridge, but I also now see why someone gave it to me for free.

I am no expert, but we had ice on the bottom of our freezer. Not this bad, but it was a problem. The temperature of the fridge and freezer was just too cold. I set the temperature to the middle setting and have had no more issues. I bet your temperature is set to the coldest setting and you dont realize it. I hope if is that simple. Also, I unplugged and let it thaw out for a couple of days before adjusting the temperature.

Our camp came with all Samsung appliances, hate them as well, someone told me

“Don’t buy a refrigerator made by a cell phone company, and if Frigidaire starts making cell phones, don’t buy that either”

I love my Samsung phone, but hate my Samsung fridge, so I have to concur with this statement.

My parents have a Samsung fridge that was getting the ice buildup at the bottom of the freezer drawer. My dad changed out the heating element like in this video, and it hasn't iced up since. Try that, although I don't think theirs was icing that bad at the top like that. Since you already know how to take it apart, skip to 5:20 for the pertinent info.
