Is an edger worth it?

Like your standard coonass I've used my weed eater to edge my whole life. However I've got a big driveway and more sidewalk space than ever before now. Is an edger worth the hassle?

Absolutely. Edging is the fastest and most rewarding part of my lawn care.

I have a Maruyama 30cc edger. Nothing bogs that thing down and I can edge my front yard in under 5 min. Wayyyy easier than my old sting trimmer method.

I recently bought a Masport edger and installed an Echo rapid loader head on it, works awesome and the strings are much more efficient than a blade. (Cheaper too)
I highly suggest giving it a try.

I’ve always used a B&D Edge Hog. Cheap and gets the job done.

I got the Southland walk behind edger from Home Depot to edge maybe 500 feet. You can pretty much jog behind it. Ive had it almost 10 years and it still cranks after 1-2 pulls, surprisingly.

I have an edger attachment for my Milwaukee weed eater and I use it probably every third to fourth time I cut. It’s nice to have the option especially in heavy growth times when it’s hard to get a clean line with the strong.

Traditional gas edger. And it's not close. I've been using the same Mclane edger for over 30 years.

It chews up the string so quickly and it’s so slow.

That's my issue. It kills my string and honestly all it takes is 1 wasp zipping by me for me to gash the yard.

Seems the consensus here is clear. I'll pull the trigger on one.

Is the consensus a gas standalone one the better option than an attachment on a multi-head type

I have an Echo Edger and Trimmer. It's nice not having to swith heads.

I have a Stihl KombiMotor setup, takes just seconds to swap from the trimmer head to the edger, absolutely prefer using the edger vs edging with the trimmer. Faster and cleaner results.

I'm still faster with the string trimmer, usually a very brisk walk. I get my 300+ feet of curb plus the 50 foot driveway and a walking path done on the same string most of the time, and in 1 charge of the kobalt 80v. I assume one day it will get harder. I hate the rolling edgers, they never cut worth a crap and took way longer when my dad or grandma insisted I used them on their yards years ago. Maybe they just had crappy ones.

Looks like you've already decided, but I'll pile on anyway. If I edge with a trimmer I need to do it every time I mow. The edger digs deeper into the dirt so I can skip a few weeks. I always blow the loose dirt out too.

for myself, no its not, but the job looks better with the edger since its a clean sharp defined cut vs the weed eater leaving less of a neat job of it after you are done.

the weed eater does the same job but the edger digs down to create a small gap between dirt and concrete, so it stays clean longer than the same job with weed eater.

so its mainly the frequency of time between redoing the trimming/edging that is the difference

I used a walk behind edger (mclane) for years and finally switched to a pole edger. Game changer, would never go back.

So much easier to use and store.

80v Kobalt or Greenworks would work great, too. Small electric motors are great if you’re not pushing the battery life. I can’t imagine someone asking if an edger surpasses string is doing enough edging to rule it out.

ETA: assuming you’re buying a different device and not putting an edging blade on your weed eater.
