Is it worth buying a car out of state and transferring to Louisiana?

After all the BS fees tacked on, it almost seems like the price could potentially be higher than waiting to buy a car in LA.
I ask because the availability on most vehicles that we are looking at is fairly low down here. I can easily go purchase what I want in South Florida and drive it up here, but I'm not sure how much in fees and registration we would end up paying once it's here.
Has anyone dealt with this recently?
UPDATE: I assumed there was more fees associated, but I was particularly concerned with having to pay an additional sales tax when registering an out of state car within the state of Louisiana.

You would just pay registration and sales tax for LA. That is no matter who you buy it from. What extra fees?

I thought there was more to it than just registration and sales tax. The sales tax thing throws me off. Do I actually pay sales tax in another state AND sales tax in the state of Louisiana?

Following the replies also. We moved to Lafayette from Dallas in 2020. It cost $975 for a 2013 F-150 and $596 for a 2014 Lexus ES 300 for taxes or registration. You know, for all the excellent roads here.

They charge taxes for where you live, I’ve bought here in La. But I live in Tx. My friends and relatives own dealerships.

You wouldn't pay full sales tax, you would get a break on what you paid in Florida.

in most cases when doing this you will pay state and local taxes where you bought it, and then have to pay louisiana state and local taxes on it to register it here. thats a big chunk of wasted money. title is around $100 and registration is about the same, but the sales taxes are where they get you for a couple thousand
only buy out of state if they register it for you in louisiana. that is what they did when i bought a truck in houston, but only legitimate dealerships can do that i think.

I have bought a few vehicles in Houston. There's no added cost. The bigger places do it so often they know how to submit anything. My two transactions with Mac Haik were flawless and stress free.
You pay the tax in the purchasing State, then only owe the difference in La. when registering it. So, the total tax is the same as if bought in La.

You shouldn't be paying anything that you wouldn't be paying on a local purchase

No. You pay the taxes for where the vehicle is registered.
These downvotes are interesting considering it's never happened to me and I've been buying cars out of state for 203 years

If that happened, you'd get that money back when you file your taxes, but I've not had it happen with the 6 vehicles I've bought out of state.

I live near Hammond and have bought my last 2 trucks new (2005 and 2017) from Houston then Katy Tx and saved thousands $'s. Louisiana Dealers are too greedy. There are no extra fees and both deals were done over the phone. I e-mailed a pic of my trade in truck with info and they made a great offer via email. I'll do it again in a heart beat.
Call dealers in other states and get the best deal.

My only comment is be sure before you leave the dealership you have all of the original required paperwork in order. Print out from the Louisiana dmv website what you will need to get the registration and title in your name.
Follow this: I bought a used vehicle in Tennessee last year and brought it back to louisiana to register and title. That dealership had bought it from an auction in Illinois. It made it to auction after being originally titled in Arizona. Would have been the cluster of all fricks if the dealership didn’t have all the right paperwork in order and/or told me to F off when I called and asked for some original docs (note: all states don’t have the same requirements for originals).

Maybe LA is special (as usual), but we bought our last one from a dealer in NC, and told them we were registering in TN. They still did the registration for us and we just paid TN sales tax, nothing at all for NC.

We went through that shock in 2020 moving back here, too

I bought a truck from Atlanta only because it’s the one I wanted. Some old man pulled in my driveway in the truck, had a packet of papers we signed on my porch, then he left in my trade. Done deal. Took like 15 minutes.
ETA delivery fee was like $500
ETA2. I feel like they collected LA taxes and mailed them in. When I went to register my truck a few weeks later everything was ready and I got my plate no problem. I could be wrong about the taxes though.

Carmax will ship it to you, and no charge if you buy the car.
