Is there an optimal direction for a house to face?

Assuming you had a mountain lot, ideally which direction would you want your house to face? Does it matter?

I’d want the best view from my back porch.

For me personally, all else being equal, I’m facing East and having my back porch facing the sunset in the West.

Not in Louisiana. My first house was like that and the back patio was miserable in the afternoons. For me that would be the worst direction.
If I had the choice, I’d go north facing so you get the summer breezes from the south and north wind is blocked in the winters on the back patio.

Agree. Plus, sun tracks north in the summer so my back patio is shaded. In the winter the suns tracks a little south and warms the back patio. They work to extend the outdoor season and make it more pleasant.

It matters. Prevailing winds, home design…Old timers that lived without AC understood it well.

My first house faced east and the evenings in the summer were miserably hot. I said never again and I had my current home built facing west. The evenings out back are much nicer. I get crosswinds from the south and the north as well. So my answer is facing west.

where do you plan to sit & drink your afternoon whiskey? That side should NOT face WEST so you won't have the sun in your face cooking that side of your house.
Ask me how I know.

face house west if you have a back patio that you and family / friends will hang out on in the afternoons. you get shade and some good breeze in the afternoons (patio facing East)

the sun set in the east at your house?
My man, if the front of your house is facing east, then your back patio is facing west and catching all of the sun.
But yeah, in Louisiana always have your house face the sun. Put the minimum number of windows needed on that side and have good blinds/shades. Then you can enjoy your back yard in the shade from 5p to 8p every evening.

optimal for what? View? Maintenance? Energy efficiency?

If we're talking a (snowy) mountain house I agree that view and prevailing wind is a big factor but you gotta make sure that driveway is on the south side to maximize winter sun exposure.
Northside driveways are ice sheets all winter long, catch that south sun!

Yea mine does this, frick that noise. Cannot sit on the patio in the afternoons unless we have the shade down. If I could turn my house, I would.

Thanks for the feedback folks..
The location would be east Tennessee, so not really too much snow and ice.
The best view would certainly be viewed from the backyard in this scenario.
I was thinking a north or northeast facing house would be ideal but wanted to hear others opinions/experiences. It may be that I just have to take what fits in the budget but all things being equal, I will use orientation as a factor.

Optimal for total owner experience. You covered what I view to be likely the main topics of influence.
The backyard will have the view...so which direction should the view face to maximize viewing enjoyment, along with minimized maintenance and energy costs.
The feedback has provided good insights on much of this.

What's crazy is I can totally see this in LA...but I LOVED 6pm sunsets in Costa Rica. Further south but a much better sunset experience.
I was pleasantly surprised to feel a nice, humidity free breeze around 5pm (on a TN mountain lot). It was prob 90 at base but where we were, it felt like 70s. Mosquitos didn't attack either. Now I just gotta find a way to get rich quick. Haha

I didn't get a choice, but my current house works great. It is not on a mountain, but it is on a hill. The front patio is facing West, the side patio is facing South and the rear deck is facing East. No matter what time of the day I can get into the shade or cool breeze if there is one blowing.
