Jeld-wen Aluminum Clad vs. Window World

I currently have aluminum clad windows on a house I purchased recently. They appear to be about 25 years old. Most are still in good shape, and a couple are not, but I am told these windows were built to last about 20 years.
I have 2 quotes: a window world one for $550 a window roughly and a Jeld-wen series that matches my current ones and is essentially the updated version of mine for roughly 2k per window installed (will know exact number today but price of windows themselves are about 1.2k per window).
Window world would be having to replace the whole house to match, whereas we would be replacing 6 windows with jeld-wen. It works out pretty close in price.
My concerns with window world is looking cheaper and not that wood/aluminum clad look.
Any thoughts? This is uncharted territory for me, as I have never dealt with window replacement.

Either way you decide to go a 25 year window is done from an efficiency perspective and needs to be changed out

So basically you are saying either one has a 25 year life span?

Life span ?
A window can be in place for 50+ years. Now a windows efficiency has a limit. In the days of old just a window is what people wanted but now it's about energy conservation and such. It would be very hard to put an exact year on a window for complete window efficiency degradation due to all the potentials a window is exposed too. But apparently testing of window efficiency degradation shows significant enough in the 12 to 15 year range to warrant change out. But again a window can be in place for much longer than that. It goes back to the owner and their tolerance need for efficiency.

I won't comment on quality but you should note it's fairly well documented here and other places that Window World has pretty terrible customer service.

I am leaning jeld-wen...just wasn't expecting 12k for 6 windows

Clad windows are expensive. There are also better options than Jeld-Wen in similar price range, but it really comes down to who the distributor is.
If you want to save some money, you can shop vinyl. High end vinyl windows aren’t cheap either though.

What would be better than jeld-wen at that price?
Are jeld-wen not good windows?

I have Jeld-wen aluminum clad doors on my house and they've been fantastic. However, the Pella aluminum glad windows seemed to be of higher quality back then (2008) and they are holding up like new, even today. Unfortunately, they are probably about the same price as the Jeld-wen ones.

They are better quality than Window World no doubt and they are definitely a higher tier window manufacturer, but if you are looking at clad in that range, I would also get quotes on Marvin, Sierra Pacific, and Andersen. They will likely be a bit more expensive but when I was researching, the general consensus was that those brands were a bit better quality. My local distributor actually had Jeldwen clad windows that were like 10% more expensive than comparable Sierra Pacific.
I’m not saying JeldWen is bad per se. I’m not a window professional either. I just researched the issue a lot and found that my local distributor pricing was all over the place, so it’s worth looking into.

Go to a local building supply or window supplier. They will get you much better pricing. For my house I just built, I bought 30 vinyl windows for $10k total. Quaker brand.

Yesterday I had Renewal by Andersen here and was quoted 3k/window. Yikes!

You’re comparing a Cadillac to a Hyundai. Spend the extra with JeldWen.
If you were just replacing old aluminum or vinyl windows then sure window world could handle that.

Our old house we bought had Window World. The warranty transferred to us when we bought. Double pane, double hung, built in screens, etc. The seals would break on some of the windows and O2 would mix with the Argon and would look like mildew between panes. However, WW replaced every one of them for free. Over 15 years, we probably changed out 20 panels or so.
Our new old house has 20 year old wood windows. Built in 2003. These things are so inefficient and they just suck. Before Covid, I got a quote on replacing and it was 28k. Now I cannot even think about the cost. We were looking at Soft-Lite and Okna which are supposed to be higher end options.

quote:seal failure is probably the number one problem on windows. Most companies take care of that but there is no warranty on labor. Argon is not a factor. If the seal breaks it condensates between the glass

Clad windows just look better. Some people just don’t want to spend money on better looking windows. Even though it’s what you look at more than anything in the house.
Anything you put requires maintenance. But don’t think because you spend money on clad windows they are maintenance free. Proper painting is important. Also, you have to open the windows and dry them out. Check your gaskets. Especially where the bottom sash sits on the sill.

I would challenge that. Even assuming a much longer lifespan, the efficiency of windows is almost never beneficial enough to pay for themselves in their lifespan. The window companies sell a big lie.
