In recent years my family goes up to the tree farm to cut a Christmas tree. In Louisiana that means either an Arizona Cypress (blue sapphire) or a Leyland cypress

I’ve given a fresh clean cut. Keep it watered and I’ve even tried the Miracle Grow preservative. Every year it decides it’s time to stop drinking and go dry.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips? Magic formulas , voodoo rituals etc?

Use really hot water when you water the tree. Helps keep any sap dissolved and the pores of the tree open.

The Mythbusters did an episode on this where they tried all the most popular methods. I can't recall their results, but may be worth checking it out.

Fresh cut just before you bring it in the house and get it in water ASAP. That's about the only way we could ever get one to stay somewhat fresh. We gave up and went artificial.

Think of the cut base of the trunk as a wound, but in this case, the wound needs to stay open to survive. That's how it drinks water.

Put hot water in the tree stand ASAP after cutting it and always water with hot water. It helps prevent the wound from clotting.

Add Plantabbs Prolong into water to help

And finally, get a spray bottle and mist the tree with cool water every couple of days all over. Mine is near the fire place and this is a must to keep it from drying out. I also put a small humidifier behind it and run that at night when we sleep.

People (my wife) can come and get my real tree from my cold, dead hands.

It's my connection to my father and childhood. I will always have a real tree. Always.

Best thing I have found is to dissolve aspirin in hot water to fill the reservoir when you first get the tree. Then water with Miracle Gro acid loving plant fertilizer. Keep the heat in the house to a minimum. I usually get mine after Thanksgiving and keep it up thru Epiphany (12th day of Christmas).

Cutting down a tree and expecting it to look alive.

Hmmm.

There are trees that you can buy that are potted and alive and you can plant after Christmas, but they typically are small.
