I have an old Kenmore 110 top load that I've been replacing parts as needed since it's such a great, simple machine. Today I noticed it did not spin with a load in it, but will spin just fine if empty. It agitates just fine as well.

I've replaced the transmission last year and the coupler today. But it still won't spin if it has any kind of load in it. Everything else is working fine, where should I be looking to fix this?

Thanks for any help

bearings more than likely. You'll have to take the drum out which is a PITA and doable. Hear any grinding with clothes in?

Direct drive?

If so, check the clutch to see it its worn down to the metal rivets that hold the pads on. Also look for oil or water that is cuased by leaking shaft seals.

I pulled the clutch this afternoon, went ahead and replaced it. Got it back together but had to leave before running a load of clothes.

Can't think of anything else it might be, it spins freely empty and if I give it a start with clothes but eventually stops.

The brake clutch assembly. Common fail item. Cheap to fix. Not too hard. Just drop the transmission. And the clutch and springs are above it. If the brake slips it wont spin.

That's what it ended up being, got it all back together and running the clothes now.

Appreciate all the responses, I've become pretty attached to this thing. I've pretty much replaced all the internals over the 13 years of owning it. No telling how old it actually is, it came with the house when we bought it.

These old, simple machines are simply the best. I wouldn't get rid of my old Whirlpool washer and dryer for anything.
