I've done a lot of things in the turf world, but don't have any experience aerating.

Anyone here done a lot of it or have any tips as far as timings, how often, etc?

Is it something all yards could use annually?

I just rented a core aerator and did my lawn this weekend. This is my first time using it on my four year old new construction home with centipede and zoysia but it seems to do good every few years. I hope we get some storms to help break the cores down.

Just make sure you use a core aerator. The solid tine type do not help nearly as much, if at all. Only issue is the little cores scattered all over the yard. They’ll break down but can be unsightly for a few days.

How much does it pull? Any worried with buried fiber lines or sprinkler lines?

We have a place in Monroe called Ram Rent All and it was 70 bucks to rent all weekend.

I marked all of my sprinkler heads with flags and if I hit a line, I could repair it.

I knew the location of my fiber line and cable line coming in so I just skipped over that area.

Home Depot or Triple A rent all in Baton Rouge. Very easy to use.

I am in the BTR area. I Looked into renting a core aerator online from AAA and Home Depot....also TrueGreen quoted me $100 to do it - for that price I had them handle it.

If you have a way to tow it (zt or riding mower with a hitch), you can buy one and do it yourself. Should pay for itself in 1-2 seasons based on the quotes. Only Pita is the space it takes to store it.

I purchased one that does a decent job. Have to put a little weight on it and time it after a good rain. I want to get a load of sand and top dress it after I aereate this year. Agri-Fab plug

Fowlguy, do you still recommend this one after 2 years? I got my eye on it…

I second the Agri-fab core pull behind. I got it because I have 2 acres of seriously compacted clay soil that needs to be broken up plenty. Renting one for a weekend would do me no good. I'm going to pull it 4 or 5 times over this summer. Just pulled it today after this rain and it worked as advertised.

So if you aerate after putting down pre emergent, I assume you now have holes in the protection, or is that not the case?

Pretty sure that's how pre-emergents work, but not positive.

Aeration is very beneficial to having a healthy lawn, and a healthy lawn will choke out most weeds

That technical is the case. You put down a barrier and you break that barrier when you pull plugs. However, the benefit of an aeration far outweigh the small chance of a weed seed finding the spot you pulled a core from.

My BIGGEST issue right now is I don’t have a thick lawn. I pre-emerge’d in February and I’ve still got a ton of weeds. My Bermuda just isn’t thick. Not that there’s bare spots, it’s generally covered completely, just really thin. I cut often and on the second lowest setting to not scalp to promote horizontal growth. I sprayed Celsius Sunday so hopefully that works out. But I just want this thing to be thick thick.

Fertilize it with a high nitrogen fertilizer.

I just got a quote from TruGreen to aerate and it was $285 for ~half an acre. I may look at getting the Agri-Fab since it’s basically the same cost. How was the assembly on it?

$285 for a 20k square foot aeration is cheap.
