Lawn striper opinion

Do they actually provide anything other than aesthetic value? I've read that changing the direction of grass blades will help keep the grass healthy, but could that just be junk science? The ones that could attach to my mower run for around $120+

I like mine. The aesthetic improvements to my yard justify the expenses
Or wait a minute...you are asking about a "striper"

I cut a push broom head in half. Put them the length of my deck which is 54". Screwed holes in the plastic of the push broom and attached to back of lawn mower deck with angle iron. Angle is bolted to deck.
Been going strong for 4 years and haven't touched it since day installed. People always ask me how I get those lawn strips. I have St. Aug grass so the strips fade before I cut again in a week

Just change the direction you mow.

What kind of grass?
I have one but I’m on centipede. It does stripe centipede but it’s not as pronounced like the guys up north with kbg. Stripes last about a day. I cut 2-3 times a week so it works for me.

A guy I work with made a striping attachment for his mower. Basically just a piece of PVC pipe (not sure of size) that he filled with sand. I saw pictures of his lawn and it does a great job.
