Lawnmower fuel system question.

I have a John Deere riding mower that is having a fuel problem. The mower will run on starting fluid, so I know it is a fuel problem.
I pulled the fuel line off between the fuel pump and carb to test the fuel pump, which is working fine.
I plug the fuel line back up between the fuel pump and the carburetor and it starts fine now.
Any idea what the cause of this was? All I did was basically unplug the fuel line and plug it back in?

You had vapor lock between the fuel pump and the carburator.

Some form of vapor lock, fuel tank vent failure or stuck...now unstuck...float valve.

Check fuel solenoid below carburetor

I thought about this however, I did nothing to fill the line with fuel as I plugged it back in.

I had this same thing happen to me a couple years ago on an old D130. I was only getting it running in order to sell it.
Did the same thing you did and it fired right on up and cranked and ran when the buyer came and picked it up.
I still see the baw who bought it around and it’s still mowing with no problems.
I’ve always wondered what was going wrong though. Only thing I could think was the gas in the carb evaporated and vapor locked. Taking the hose off released the vapor and allowed fresh fuel in.
But I’m a long way from a mechanic so I don’t even know if that makes sense.

This right here ^^^
The vapor pressure of the gasoline is higher than what the little fuel pump can output.
