I spent this weekend spreading top soil trying to level my lawn. Some spots are as much as 2-2 1/2 inches deep. Should I just give my centipede time to grow through or should I spread some seeds on top?

Also, I didn't tamp it down but I'm planning on it. Is that the right way to go about it?

Thanks

Probably shouldn't have gone 2-2.5 inches deep. Unless you are leveling and then adding sod you should do about .5 inches and let the grass grow through. Since it is already done I'd wait and see if it grows through. Also, I wouldn't go pack it down. It won't grow through at that point.

Most southern lawn grasses should be able to grow through up to 2 inches of top fill. That is the max depth consumer horticultural extension agents recommend when adding fill for any single application, once grows through and is established you can add more fill if needed. You should not require any seed.

Did you use use mineral soil or composted forest products? Bags of compost from box stores, retail garden centers are frequently labeled as “top soil” though it has no mineral soil in it what so ever. If you added that product it will decompose over time and not permanently fill in low spots as mineral soil or sand would.

I did truck loads of top soil from a local place. 4 yards. No idea what type it is. I just said give me the top soil.

Sounds like “real” mineral soil so you are good.

Not to discourage you, but I killed the centipede/carpet grass in my lawn by adding ~2in of masonry sand in the low spots. I had to come back with sod on top.

Maybe you could try seeding with a good quality tifblair centipede seed over the top soil, assuming you didn’t apply a pre-em?

My understanding is that Masonry sand is the issue. It will choke out what you're trying to grow. Top soil wont do that as long as it doesn't get too deep.

I could be wrong, but that's I've gathered from reading and talking to people.

Gonna hijack for a sec.

Have a depression about 4'x8' about 3-4" deep in my Bermuda. Is 2" of sand applied at a time too much to grow thru or should I add less per dressing to level out spot?

TIA. .

Why does everyone add sand and not topsoil?

I wouldn't do 2 inches at a time. I don't like to have spots that I'm waiting a long time to have grass grow through. I do about .5 inches at a time a couple times per year.

I always use a mix of sand and compost. My lawn is all clay except for the first 1 or so. New builds use shitty dirt. I add the sand to help drainage and I ad compost for good organic material. I use only sand to fill in holes (small holes)

I know spillway dirt is an absolute no no but is river sand safe or hit and miss? I have about 3,000 sq. ft. I want to top dress.

I can have a guy deliver and spread 7 cu. yd. of river sand for about $500.

My only other alternative is to have Home Depot deliver 165 bags of top soil and compost, blow my back out moving it around, and spread it myself.

I don’t know what parish you are in but I might suggest you contact your LSU AgCenter consumer horticultural extension agent to see if they might know the source of River Silt you plan to buy has any known issues with torpedograss. They’ve always said spillway fill from the Bonne Carre spillway is the material to avoid but I don’t how much torpedograss contamination has spread to other dirt source areas.

I wouldn’t do this if you are specifically trying fill in low spot in the yard, but if trying to rejuvenate a lawn this you could do this, as much as a pain as it night be.

I'm more so trying to fill some low spots and just add back to my yard. I'm in Metairie, 70003. This area is notorious for soil subsidence. Like really really bad.
