Torn between planting one these two approximately 6-8ft off one corner of the house as part of new landscaping.

You will get intelligent replies on the home & garden board, if that’s what you want. Otherwise, you’re in the right place.

The Teddy Bear is such a superior tree I’d find a way to plant it 10ft off the house

I can push out the planting to 10ft and still make the beds look good and also do like the look of the leaves of the teddy bear. I am just not a huge fan of anything too conical or “Christmas tree” like in shape. I know magnolias tend to grow somewhat cone shaped when young but I am having trouble finding verified mature example of both.

Little Gem Magnolia Named Louisiana Super Plant

Mature Little Gems are not conical-pyramidal in shape. Neighbor has one 25+ years old, I have one 8 years old, about 7 feet from house foundation.

Same neighbor also has what I think is a Teddy Bear Magnolia, based on height & shape, 25+ years old. Good looking tree, but definitely broad-wide at the base of the canopy and pyramidal in shape.

A magnolia may not be what you want. Even a seedling grows conical until very mature in landscapes. I would choose a little gem. It with grow fuller with less pruning than the teddy bear.

Either way, plant it as far away as you can.

If I wanted to use one of these 2 as a screen from a neighbor which would work best?

The Teddy Bear is a more full tree than the LG. The TB is also a smaller overall tree. I have both and have installed hundreds of each.

I’ve grown thousands and thousands of magnolias. Haven’t grown teddy bear in years. It was a poor performer. I did like its foliage better. It just didn’t preform as well in the nursery.

Not what you are asking but I recommend a Kay Parris magnolia for a corner near a house. We splurged and spent a lot on a 9 ft tall one and it has been awesome. Quick grower and allegedly doesn’t grow into foundation or plumbing. After 2 years I think it’s around 15-16 ft tall and about 10 ft wide.

That is a nice Teddy Bear specimen.

I actually have a Teddy Bear at my current house that has been in the ground approximately 15 years - this one is not near the house. Close to 20ft tall and is a good looking tree but very pyramidal.

I rode around some old established neighborhoods and notice more what appear to be Little Gems and prefer their more ovate to columnar growth habit.

The Little Gems can be nice trees but they have a tendency to have “holes” in the growth habit. They require cutting back to keep full ( at least from the S La growers I purchase from). My LG’s got whacked by the power company tree trimming crew and they have responded to look better than ever

WeagleEagle can you send me the name of your nursery? I’d love to have another grower to source material from. Thanks! ( daponch@hotmail.com)

Which one is the one where the limbs start super close to the ground, almost giving it more of a bush look?

I was thinking of getting a little gem soon but I prefer the more "tree" look where the limbs start up off the ground.

Just saw the one posted above, I'm not particularly a fan of that one where the limbs start near the ground.

Is the little gem what I'm looking for?
