So basically, I have mice in the attic. They’ve burrowed into the insulation. I got them coming fill holes in the exterior. Baiting the attic.

I already knew I needed about 6 more inches of insulation but they’re telling me they recommend I have it vacuumed, sanitized, interior access points fixed and Orkin insulation blown in.

All for the low low price of $14,500.00.

This seems absolutely absurd to me. Let’s say I call out a contractor to use spray foam insulation. What exactly am I looking at? I figure $5-6000 for a 2500 sqft home.

It would work just as well with the Orkin maintenance plan, fix my insulation problem and the foam would seal the unseen crevices.

Still, $14,000 just seems ridiculous with Orkin. I like their plan but that seems way too steep a price.

Update:

Basically I called Terminex out and they confirmed my mice problem wasn’t that bad. I still needed insulation so I got a quote...$2100 to blow in 6 inches of insulation (I’m at R24 now). I went ahead and went with their offer. It was far and away cheaper than any other contractor or pest control company I spoke with.

It’s an outrageous quote.

Have Orkin handle the critters and an insulation company handle the rest

If you want a DIY solution, you can buy insulation from Home Depot and they let you use the insulation blowing machine for free.

It's an itchy but straight forward job to add six inches of pink insulation. You put the square bundle of insulation in the machine and it blows out of the hose on the other end.

Otherwise, I would find an insulation company. Orkin would probably be subbing it out, so you could skip that middleman and save some bucks.

The sanitation is where the absurdity is. If it’s not catastrophic urine/feces seeping into your Sheetrock and whatnot it’s not going to do any harm up there as long as you get the mice out, and the exclusion will do that. They like to scare you with disease and viruses and whatnot. This is the exact insulation they along with Terminix uses, it’s just borate and cellulose insulation:

I have a high gabled attic so I would never pay to have it blown in, your situation may vary.

Pulling the old stuff out would suck but you can do it yourself. And I would get it out. That shite is nasty with piss and shite. But you can blow in your own fairly easy. Most places rent the blower and you can buy the bags at about $40 a bag. For about $1500 you should be able to insulate your attic

Normally, it would be recommended to do it in cooler weather so you can wear long sleeves, gloves, mask, pants to cover all of your skin; but...

You may want to consider duct taping the ends of your sleeves, pants legs, around your collar, etc.

Got a Spray Foam quote of $12,500 from an insulation contractor with removal.

To just add blown insulation $4500. 8-10 inches added

Orkin stuff as $3300 to just do their insulation on top. 6 inches worth.

I have no idea what to do at this point. Going to solve the rodent issue first, do the exclusion and figure the rest out.

I used to be with Orkin 15 years ago. Saw termites, so had them in for a consultation. About to sign the contract to have them remediate when the technician boasts that "with my trained eye, I can see your neighbor has termites". He didn't know that it was new construction, not there a month.

I told him as much and promptly cancelled my service.

Will never trust Orkin again.

Bait in the attic usually ends with dead and rotting mice in the attic stinking up the house

If your attic is high enough to stand up in, you can remove the old insulation and install new insulation yourself. It is a lot of work and not very fun, but you should be able to do this yourself for probably $2k.

You will be cussing up a storm while doing the work, but I am sure the vacation to Hawaii will take some of the sting out of it.

$14,500-$2,000 = plane tickets + ocean front hotel room

What is the alternative? I guess they’ll come back and check the traps, etc. hopefully I don’t have to clean that crap up.

I think I may end up making this my Fall project. I can rent a vacuum to suck all the insulation out myself and I’ll get a few friends together to help.

They all want $5,000 to suck the insulation out. I bet I could do that part at minimum. I’ll rent a vacuum and get it done in a day or two.

This is going to be a job but I bet with some research I can do this crap myself.

frick that’s a scary number. I need to reinsulate my attic as well. Luckily not due to pest issues but the insulation is old and crumbling. There was also a roof leak about 7 years ago.

I’d like to do it myself but the attic is small and you have to crawl around some of it. The access point is also narrow and I have no idea how to remove the insulation without it getting all over the house.

Get rid of the mice first and see if you notice a problem. The stuff they put up there makes them go off to die, so probably won't die up there. Smell is all I would be concerned with - you don't dwell in the attic. Every house I've had has had mice poop in the attic

Your insulation quotes are insane imo. Doubt you will need to remove any. Adding isn't too tough. Lots of helpful tips on the internet to do it. Take you a weekend morning.
