Our west facing side of house, which is at the top of our stairs, and where our primary entrance door is, gets blistering hot.

We have three 11' wide by 11' tall sections that need shading.

Have considered the handcrank shades, but just haven't pulled the trigger.

I've been seeing lots and lots of motorized shades being installed. Ideally, I could set a timer to open/close them daily.

Wired? Cordless? Solar? How durable are they? Side track or not? Looking for suggestions on what to look at and what not to bother with.

If you are looking for motorized screens I highly recommend Nucode Shutters & Screens. Their motorized screens and customer service are unbeatable.

Nucode did mine and we love it. It’s 24’ wide but gives us a whole additional living space. We have the 95% screen that keeps air movement down so the patio stays warm in the winter with a fire in the fire place.

We got the light color, kind of like sand/white. Looks good but can get dirty. Easy to pressure wash but bronze wouldn’t show that.

I will say this, try to get one that’s Hurricane rated. They didn’t have that option when we installed.

Agree. It is definitely like an additional living space. The temperature difference is pretty crazy. We only have 2 ceiling fans on our back patio and it’s significantly cooler with the screens closed.

Yea we did the hurricane rated in black and love it.

I went with motorized and I’ve got 3 that are around 11x9 or 10. One of the best things I’ve done at my house. Used to burn up in the summer and freeze in the winter but with the shades it completely changed that.

Sounds like you are happy with your setup. I also have a west facing patio that is just difficult to enjoy a lot of times in the afternoon/evening. I am considering a good shade like this (there is one from prior owner but not a good one like you are referring to). One hesitation is cutting off too much of the backyard view. But the only other ideas I have are small landscape trees or something like that. I presume for you it's worth it going with the shade idea? Appreciate it.
