This is my first post here and I figured this was the right board as I have seen some older threads talking about these products. Long story short I own a small lawn care business that I do on the side and this year I have been having Virginia Buttonweed taking over some of my yards. I know it is a hard weed to kill but I have done some research and heard that MSM Turf or Celsius would be best to try to tackle it. My questions is would this time of year be a good time to start application? Almost all my yards have stopped growing but the weather is still fairly warm right now during the day. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Celsius works better in the heat. Your VBW has probably stopped growing as well. Plants need to be actively growing for full control.

Thanks for the response. Another quick question if you know the answer. One of my clients has Centipede grass in their backyard and in the front they have a softer, thicker grass that I was always told was called Carpetgrass. LSU seems to use it a lot on their campus especially around PFT and the BusEd buildings. Would either of those chemicals kill that type of grass?

Celsius will kill carpetgrass but MSM Turf is safe to use on carpetgrass. MSM Turf will kill bahiagrass if you ever come across that “weed” in a lawn.

Craw nailed it but just to add a not so fun story. 7-8 years ago I'm full spraying a lawn in Zachary. Big yard, 20-25,000 square feet. Most of the square footage in the back and I'm spraying the St Aug with Celsius. Wasn't St Aug, it was carpetgrass. Some I was able to revive and some I had to resod.

Taught me a very important lesson. Never assume grass type.

Will the VBW begin growth earlier next Spring than my St. Aug? I ask because I finally ordered MSM, but never got around to using it this Fall. Oh, and will MSM kill Lespedeza ?

MSM is very effective on lespedeza, but I find it comes back quickly if the underlying issue (usually fertility or compaction) isn’t addressed.

I don’t find that is the case in my lawn in BR. My St Aug and Centipede green up in March, St Aug before the Centipede, and I don’t see what little VBW I have have emerging before late April.

It is good to note now the areas in up your lawn where VBW is present, draw a map if you have to, and then look for it in earnest emerging starting in mid-April. If you spray it when it’s young, you can really keep it in check.
