My BBQ grill caught on fire. Apparently propane tanks are hard to make explode?

We had a bunch of meet on the BBQ with the lid closed and it somehow caught on fire. I went out there and the whole thing was on flames. The flames were coming out from underneath, wrapping around the top, and the flames were on the propane tank itself. The temp meter was pegged out, obviously.
At first I was thinking maybe we just let it do its thing because I didn't want to be near it when it went kaboom but I decided to turn the burners off and open the lid. The fire died down and no explosions happened.
Needless to say I got take out for lunch and cleaned the grill out good today. It had a lot of buildup and I think the PAM my wife sprays on it wasn't helping either.

Use a 4 inch paint roller and mineral oil for cleaning grates instead of Pam.

Happens with grease build up OP, or just a lot of fat/ grease in your meat in general in one big cook can cause it. Butter/ oil spray burns off almost immediately and restaurants use it non stop all night that’s not the cause of it.
But yes usually the first thing to melt is your regulator hose, ask me how I know…

You should probably stick to letting the men use the BBQ from here on out.

No shite

Keep the grill clean and cut out the PAM

I'm going to say it was a dirty arse gas grill that caused it, not the use of Pam. Most people never clean below the burners on a gas grill, and over time causes a grease/fat fire. It is going to take whole lot of Pam on the grill to cause a fire.

I just tell the family that I wanted to try a new recipe blackened chicken jerky
OP, look into a grill rescue. Basically, when I am done grilling, I turn the burners up for a few minutes and soak the brush in water. Then I scrub the grills down. Once done turn off burners and close lid to let the heat dry. Next time I grill, I rescrub them down. Only time I run into flames/fire is if we use too much olive oil in the marinade.

No doubt it being dirty contributed to his big problem here. PAM alone wouldn't have done it.
But like he said, it didn't help either.

Guilty as charged. It’s a Weber grill with cast iron grates. Honestly I was just cleaning the grates off and ignoring the rest.
That shite is no joke. Thankfully it was under a metal cover and not by the house.

a dirty grease pit and the ground meat in a sleeve isn't a good combo. shite was greasy like hell and had flames everywhere.

Grease buildup is the cause of prolly 90% of grill fires. High fat foods like bacon or ground meat drip a lot of fat and that can also cause a fire, even on a clean grill. Best to keep it clean by removing the grates and flavorizer shields to scrape everything down. I use a paint scraper. It can be a PITA, but not as bad as having to go get Cane’s cause you ruined dinner and nearly burned the house down.

I prefer to turn mine on full blast for a little while before and after cooking.

Before you start cooking turn your grill up to max temp and burn off all the excess drippings out.
When my wife grills she leaves it dirty so I just burn it all out before cooking.

Before each cook I get the grill heat pegged out, use a wire brush and a spray bottle with water to clean the grill. Its always clean and nothing sticks.
