Natural Gas smell in garage

Noticed a naturally gas smell in the garage yesterday. No gas appliances in there. Gas service enters through the wall on the side of the garage, but it's just piped up to the attic. Opened garage and fanned it out. Checked all propane tanks and butane torches. Put them on the back patio to confirm it's not them. It was back again today. Shut off the gas at the meter for the night. Going to call someone in the morning. Just not sure if this is a utility company call, or a plumber? Also can't figure out what would cause this. Doesn't smell like gas at the meter. And can't see the line in the wall just springing a leak randomly...

Utility company. Let them make sure you’re safe before going forward.
Also do now.

Gas company probably won't charge you to come look.
If it's on their side of the meter, or the meter, they'll fix it.
If not, they'll tell you.
A plumber isn't coming for free.

Keep in mind that the gas company will most likely cut off your gas if the leak is on your side of the meter. I had a leak on my side of the meter going to the gas heater. Atmos required a licensed plumber to fix the leak and have the plumber do a pressure test. A city building inspector had to be there for the pressure test. All the plumber did was tighten a fitting to fix the leak but the process took about a week before Atmos cut the gas back on.

Yep probably loose fitting OP. As said, gas company will look and find it for free but will then cut your gas off. I’ve had regulators go bad also, but that’s fairly obvious smell outside that you said you didn’t smell.
You are going to need to plan for it like already mentioned in that there’s a good chance you may not be able to get a plumber out until after Xmas at this point, unfortunately.

Your gas company ALWAYS wants to be called anytime you smell gas. They will not charge you and the worst thing that could happen is the gas leak is on your house piping and they shut your gas off (you have that

I’ve seen a lot of videos on the news of peoples houses blowing up with natural gas/propane leaks. The neighbors always say “I smelled gas”
But you do you.

Get some snoops. Pour around fittings and see if they are leaking. If you fine one shut gas off at meter tighten fitting. Turn gas back on. Test with snoops again.

Problem is where the smell is at, there is no exposed fittings. Everything is in the wall straight up to the attic. The smell is in no other room in the house. Gas was off all night, and I cleared the air in the garage (have an air filtration system for woodshop). Smell is back again this morning. I have a feeling this may be coming from something else. Maybe my generator. Normally don't keep gas in it as it runs on a natural gas line for the house but did let my kid's school use it for an event last week and it's got gasoline in it from that. Just doesn't smell like gasoline to me, but it's so diluted I could be wrong. Still calling the gas company this morning to check it out.

Gas and natural gas really don’t smell anything alike. I’ve heard of nails penetrating pipe and but they seal good enough to not leak. Then as time goes they corrode and then the pipe leaks.

We had the same issue. Atmos came out sniffed around my house and eventually figured out the neighbor had a very small leak at his meter.
So like everyone said, call gas company, its free.

With the gas on, you could have gone into the attic, odds are, the line goes into the attic, then branches from there. You can go outside, get a bucket of water and liquid soap, pour over ever fitting and the entire meter.
If it's found to be a leak within the garage wall. Tear out the Sheetrock, follow the line into the attic.
Anything on your side of the meter, get a plumber!

They pressure tested the system and are replacing the meter on the off chance it was releasing some fumes. It was ready for an update anyway. Everything in the house tested fine.

Good deal, it doesn't take much. Like I said I've had regulators go bad on the outside of the house.
We have a street light in a private neighborhood that is gas and it goes out about twice a year. If you park in the driveway and the wind is very light or blowing, you can smell the gas from 10 ft or so away in the driveway. The street light is just barely like a candle so I can't imagine its much flow, so point being you can smell it very easily.

Does it trigger an all out emergency response when you call the gas company about a potential leak?

Not really. But they were there within 30 minutes.
