Need some help identifying what's making this hole in the yard

First, this area of the backyard is always slow to come in so I know it looks like shite right now. No need to remind me of that!
In the past there's always been a little small hole in this general area that I figured was a snake and haven't thought much of it because I haven't seen anything and there's no harm done. I was out there earlier this week and noticed a much bigger hole along with what looks like some disruption to the ground near the hole. I'm thinking maybe this isn't a snake and might be some kind of burrowing rodent instead? Anyone have any idea what could be causing this and what kind of solution I may need?

Honestly i just figured small hole = snake. Prior to this summer the hole has been MUCH smaller with no other visible ground disturbance.
If it is a chipmunk, what should I do about it?

My dogs killed a couple and then I trapped the last one with a rat trap and peanut butter. Felt kind of bad about it but they were causing erosion under my slab.

But they do not mention Armadillos. So I assume they are further north or west than the deep south (including south Texas). What you have does look like an armadillo hole to me
Have you seen any track in the area? Take a picture and post that if you do. Holes like that can be a burrow if deep enough or they can simply be animals digging for grubs and such which expands the possibilities to things like skunks.

I'm in BIrmingham. Dont' think I've seen any armadillos around that I can recall

Snakes don't make holes. They'll use an abandoned hole, though.
I don't think it is an armadillo, which you would have in Birmingham. Maybe chipmunk. Maybe a weasel or gopher. If it has been there a while it is a burrow and not something digging for food. Put a stick in it and see how deep it is.

To determine if it’s an active vole tunnel system, put an apple slice on the hole and cover it with a bucket so other rodents/animals can’t get to it. Check back in a few days and if it’s gone, you have an active vole. You decide what to do next.

The skunk that is still hanging around our property is on a murderous killing spree. Cicadas are emerging right now, and it is catching them right before or as they emerge. I counted around 20 sets of wings under some trees yesterday. Skunks are messy diggers. Armadillos are precision.

I am testing out putting sand down the chipmunk holes I have. My dog is part lab and part German shepherd and once he gets his Schnoz in that hole he’s gonna dig until he finds it. So far it’s working.

Snakes don’t make holes. Do what I’ve said in other threads, put a water hose in it and drown whatever may be in there.

pour gas down it and a match in there. Fill it with water. Dump some quick crete in there and soak it, that will really piss them off.
