I would like a small tree coming off the corner of the house where I am about to put a small bed in front of the garage.
Not a big fan of crape myrtles.

Not truly a tree, but more of a very large treelike shrub: vitex, aka chaste tree. The Blue Shoals variety makes lovely long blue flower spikes in summer. Can be pruned to a couple of branching trunks or left wide and shrubby.
Asian magnolia aka purple magnolia is slow growing, a compact tree that can be shaped. Purple and white mangnolia like flowers come out in early spring before the leaves.

Sweet Olive is a good choice. I had one that was killed by Katrina's floodwaters and never replaced since I put in some raised garden beds, but it is a nice tree that blooms a couple times a year when mature. The blossoms smell very sweet, similar to honeysuckle vines.

Vitex - abbeville blue variety
Sweet Olive - more of a shrub but nice
Japanese Maple - variety that will tolerate full sun since I assume you have full sun
Japanese Magnolia
You don’t like crapes but a Natchez is always a good bet.
Avoid drake elms, they are prone to lean.
Bradford pears look great one week a year them dump shite all over your yard in every rainstorm.

Another yes on sweet olive. Its small white blooms with perfume aroma occur pretty consistently during the fall/winter months.
Also suggesting mayhaw, that is one of the earliest shows of prominent white flowers in the spring, and now the red berries are dropping.

To be clear though a sweet olive at least at first, is not a traditional tree. It’s more like a large shrub. The OP needs to Understand that

I always thought the Japanese Maple needed a little cooler weather (zone 8 and up). I'm in S. La. and whatever I get will get sun full blast. South facing and not a bit of shade all day.
I will look into the Sweet Olive. Sounds like with pruning it won't get too big which would be nice.
Has anyone had luck with White Dogwood?
Edit:
We have some of these at the office. Great looking when blooming, just wouldn't have to deal with the nuts when they fall off.

Dogwoods are rough down here. You can grow them but you need some shade
bloodgood maples can handle the sun. Some other varieties as well as long as they are kept watered.

If the OP is in BTR, I saw that a non-profit is giving away trees on May 4th at the Goodwood Library.

This tree distribution is designed to help these affected residents replace trees lost to the flooding. Baton Rouge Green staff and Enterprise Rent-A-Car volunteers will be distributing the trees with planting kits from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Goodwood Library. Trees are limited to 2 per household. All trees to be distributed are native species to South Louisiana, such as Cypress, Redbud, White Oak, Dahoon Holly, Eastern Red Cedar and Sweetbay Magnolia.

Weeping yaupon. It's a a large shrub that can be pruned to be tree-formed. It's not for everyone though.
Purple smoke tree
Tree-formed Indian Hawthorne (does great in full sun)
Tree-formed loropetulum
Heart of Gold redbud is a great looking small tree

I’ve been doing a lot of research and about to pull the trigger on a couple of Vitex.
They look great and just what I need.

Love them. Nice and showy in the spring and summer and actual get a nice shape to them when pruned properly.
To the OP, Forest Pansey Redbuds would be nice as well. Not sure they can take the full sun though.

They look great, I'm just wondering if it would look awkward next to the 4 azaleas I just planted (2 pink & 2 white).
