Mine is from 2002 he’s saying I will need a new one , 2000 sq ft ranch it’s in my attached garage attic, I just have the pull down steps to get up there.
Coming back to give estimate tomorrow anyone give me a ballpark what I should expect, my drip pan was overflowing this weekend, I thought the drain got clogged he’s saying it froze up, pan currently has 1/4 water and unit has a new filler now… I never changed it in 10 years I didn’t know

What's wrong with the one you have now?

Clogged AC filter will cause a coil to freeze.

4 ton $5-9k is my guess. Even $6k for a basic unit would probably be a steal this time of year but anything over 8, you better be getting a heat pump, variable speed or something fancy. Just my guess.

I just now replaced the filter, I’ve never seen one this bad, there’s a hole in it, I can only imagine the damage I did not replacing it, I honestly didn’t know, first home rented all my life… I change my furnace filter every 3 months, it’s the same size 16x20x1 so I had a spare

So why do they want to replace it?

What did he say was the problem? Leaking evaporator coil? 20 + year old unit, R-22, is probably at the end of its life. Certainly a clogged filter can cause a unit to freeze up as well as low refrigerant (which means a leak in the system) or a poorly functioning air handler-furnace blower motor.

I think today HVAC companies see an old R-22 system, they just want to replace it, even if a cost-effective repair might be warranted. The HVAC company I used for years told me once their supply of R-22 in their warehouse was exhausted they just weren’t going to work on R-22 units anymore.

Feb 2023 I paid $13K for a changeout - a 4-ton single stage Trane. I got 4 bids, all small or med size reputable companies, all 4 bids were within $1K of each other. 2 bids were for Trane products, 2 were Carrier products. Baton Rouge. I gather prices for HVAC changeouts in BR seem higher than other locations - why, I don’t know.

I got 3x units for less than that four years ago in DFW. The cost of units has gone up since then but only by a few hundred each. It was also during winter.

That’s super fair this time of year. I think those guys just have to make their money when the getting is good. I wouldn’t have skipped the furnace but that’s just because mine were falling apart when I swapped and I was a little nervous about my DIY work and parts selection. Cheapest Amazon gas valve, why not?

Step one based on having never changing the filter: clean the evaporator.

Well if it’s working fine, and has a slow evaporator coil leak requiring 1 to 3 lbs of R-22 to get it with specs that may easily get you through the remainder of the cooling season. In meantime, get quotes and you’ll know what you dealing when you have to replace it - that day will come eventually.

Now you know about changing the filter, do that regularly, and wash down the dirt on the outdoor condensing coil which will help. Don’t use a high MERV pleated filter if it’s a 1 inch thick filter - try using a cheap MERV 4 spun fiberglass filter & change it monthly during the cooling season.

A lot of people are just charging too much, in ascension parish I got 2 5 ton units changed out late last year, American standard , one with electric heat strips cost me 8K, the second was everything except the gas furnace as it was fine for just over $7K

I would find out why he cant refill and get someone else to look at it. He's probably full of shite and just trying to sell you a whole new unit.
