Anyone plant these? This is supposed to be a sterile variety, however they still can grow saplings from the roots I have heard.

I bought a few to plant on the far side of my property near my pond. I like the idea of a fast growing tree that puts out fragrant flowers in the spring.

So were the first Bradford Pear trees imported to/sold in the US.

Looking into this tree, and it sounds like a nightmare similar to the callery pear debacle. Some states have already declared it invasive, others deem it a weed, and some either have or are considering banning the sale of the trees. Generally, a super fast growing, non-native species just isn't a good fit for any ecosystem it isn't already naturally a part of.

Some of the same marketing language and wonder-plant pimping is going on with this tree that went on with the Bradford Pear. We have a bad habit of learning way too slowly, though.

assuming you live in south LA, better natives include

-river birch
-willow
-wax myrtle
-mayhaw
-flowering quince
-wild cherry

non natives that flower but aren’t invasive are crepe myrtle, chaste tree, etc

I know all about the Bradford pears, got plenty on my property. They were here when I bought the house, never cared for them. Not due to the invasive habit but because they are just not visibly appealing to me, and they are notorious for breaking for no reason much less a high windstorm breaking them.

The Empress trees arrived and i will be planting them on the perimeter of my property more than 150 yards or so from the house. I'm surrounded by sugar cane fields so no neighbors to worry about. I'll give them a go. Thanks for the comments!

P.S. Along with the Empress trees i recieved a nice 3 ft Deodar Cedar.
