Got an old Windmill backpack blower that of former owner of the house left when we bought our house. Thing probably hadn’t been run in years. I buy the premixed 50:1 trufuel, but the blower says to use 25:1. I put just a little of the 50:1 (since that’s all I had on hand) yesterday to see if I could get it to crank, and sure enough, it did

I’ve read mixed stuff online that older engines originally marked for 25:1 May be able to run on 50:1. Is this true, or will it ruin the motor?

I can always mix 25:1 at some point but I’d like to use what I have on hand if possible

Figure out what size the backpack blower gas tank is and how much oil you would need to add to the 50:1 mix to make 25:1. Add this amount of oil to the backpack blower gas tank and pour in the 50:1 trufuel and give the blower a shake.

Me personally I would just eyeball pouring about a teaspoon of oil into the backpack blower and add the trufuel

Too much oil in the mix won't damage the engine but may foul the spark plug. Not enough oil and the engine is toast.

Stihl dealer I use told me how he was amazed how many people don’t measure the oil they add to the gas. They just pour some in often too much and gum up the plugs and carburetor or not enough and burn up the engine. He said it was his biggest moneymaker.
Me I’m OCD and measure it precisely

People also have a huge misconception about adding extra oil in the mix is safer than being slightly lean. Oil lubricates but gasoline cools and an over heating 2-stroke with too much oil will cause carbon build up and eventually scuff the bore and ruin the engine. New synthetic mix oil provides all the lubrication needed, runs cleaner, and being able to run leaner mixes means the engine runs cooler too. That being said, vintage 2-strokes that have cast iron cylinder liners need more oil regardless.

Why? I mean honestly, how hard is it to add enough oil to a 50:1 can to make it 25:1? Buy the small thing of 2 stroke oil that you add to a gallon. If you only add it to a quart it will last you awhile, they are like $2.

ETA: I guess I came off kinda dickish, but OP they sell pre mix 40:1 and 50:1 for a reason. I'd bet the average homeowner may not every realize the difference because they may not get the time on the machine to mess the piston/s before something else goes wrong. But commercial guys absolutely would.

Double it
Not dickish at all it’s a damn ratio!
I am guessing the person asking the question is probably educated past the 8th grade but it’s simple math
