We have a large mature pecan that I failed to prune back in March. Now it’s shaggy as hell and lost a huge limb in a recent windstorm.

Is it OK to give it a major haircut in June? We aren’t expecting any extreme heat in northeast Texas for a while. We’ve had about double the normal rainfall for this time of year.

I'd say wait until Sept. Summers about to start

Barely into growing season. I’d wait it out til a couple weeks before fall.

I wouldn't. One, you'll be limiting any pecan production the tree may have. And two, pruning this late can force the tree to put out a bunch of water sprouts that won't be good for the tree or for your future pruning of it.

I have 30 mature pecan trees. I prune year round. Just coat the exposed cut with a wound sealer. Basically tar to prevent infections.

Do you heavily prune going into Summer, though? It doesn't seem like the OP is planning to just take a couple sucker branches off.

Cicada damage is starting to show up on mine now. Full leaves are shedding and all have the zipper damage from the cicadas, also have some flagging here and there. Nothing terrible that will cause a longterm issue, just annoying.

Thanks all. My motivation was to help prevent any more massive damage from storms. The limbs are very weighted down, but it sounds like it’s best to wait until early fall.
