Painting vinyl siding

The wife (no pics) & I bought an older fishing camp & it is need of some serious updating. It has light cream color vinyl siding that we’d like to change to a shade of gray perhaps. We just haven’t decided on light or dark gray though. Painting the siding would be far more preferable than the cost of total replacement. However, I see so many different takes online about painting vinyl siding that I’m skeptical. Do any of y’all have any experience doing this? Is acrylic the best paint for this?

I’d check with a vinyl company. Remember vinyl, expands and contracts. This might help.

my grandfather's house had vinyl siding installed in the 70s. Held up pretty well but yellowed. After they passed on the house was sold last year. New owner painted it off white and I must say it looks pretty damn good after 14 or so months.
Doesn't look brand new obviously but a huge improvement. Impressive.

I bought a home with a 16x20 shed. Was just using the house as a rental property. The shed had vinyl siding on it and was an ugly color. Had a handy man pressure wash it and he painted it to match the house. That was about 3 yrs ago, still looks great.

Acrylic is certainly the best choice for vinyl siding. Pressure wash then paint. Use Jomax if you have mildew issues. A medium gray is about as dark as you want to go. Too dark can make the siding warp from heat absorption.

Shwrwin Williams makes exterior paints that are vinyl safe. Check with them to see what your options are.

Agree with staying away from dark colors. We did a green that was a really nice match with bricks and such but was a little too dark. Didn’t have a problem with summer of ‘22 but had noticeable warping during this past summer.
